Climbing Mt Rainier

At 14,411 ft (4,392 m), Mt Rainier towers over Seattle.  On clear days, Rainier is visible from just about every Seattle neighborhood.

Nearly 2 Million people visit the park every year, while 9,000 attempt to climb to the top.  A mere 5,000 succeed annually. This lens is for the visitors to Rainier that want to actively engage with the mountain.  That includes hiking along the miles of trails in the park area, all the way to full summit attempts.

Rainier Guide Services

There are just 3 park sanctioned guide services that will operate on the Camp Muir route on Rainier going forward (up from 1 in 2006).
Rainier Mountaineering Inc.
RMI was the sole guide service to operate on Mount Rainier for many, many years. They are a locally-based, very professional outfit that climbs on some of the most challenging peaks around the world.
International Mountain Guides
Interational Climbing Organization. They had earlier been licensed to climb the longer Emmons Glacier Route.
Alpine Ascents International
Interational Climbing Organization. They had earlier been licensed to climb the longer Emmons Glacier Route.

Mt Rainier Climbing Blog

A good blog written by Mike Gauthier, the climbing program manager and rescue coordinator for Mount Rainier National Park (also an author of one of the Rainier books highlighted). Contains useful information about the conditions on the popular climbing routes.

Personal accounts from trips to Rainier
Our climb - 2006
I climbed Rainier with a group of 7 friends, led by RMI. 6 of us made it to the top.
Unguided climb - 2006
Short account with a few good photos of a successful unguided summit bid.
Unguided climb - 2004
Several great high-res photos of Rainier and a well-written account of an unguided climb. Our experience with RMI was nothing like what they described. In fact, we were incredibly impressed with RMI's professionalism.
1998 Avalanche
While not a travelog, this news account of an avalanche on Rainier remind us of the sobering risks taken at altitude.
