Alfons Maria Mucha ~Self Portrait
Alfons Maria Mucha (1860-1939)
Not often mentioned in the history of art, Alfons Mucha made his mark. Every heard of "art nouveau"? You can thank Munch for that. Painting, sculpture to poster, magazine, and calendar illustration, and product and architectural design have all been enhanced by art nouveau. Alfons Maria Mucha was a singer as his main profession and that allowed him to do his art, his drawing, that he had loved since childhood. He worked at decorative painting, theatrical scenery, and in 1879 moved to Vienna to work for a leading Viennese theatrical design company, while working on his artistic education. When a fire destroyed his employer's business in 1881 he returned to Moravia, doing freelance decorative and portrait painting.

I Painted a Dream of Enchanted Faeries Where Flowers Met the Dew

~~*~~
"I Painted a Dream of Enchanted Faeries Where Flowers Met the Dew"
I painted a dream of enchanted faeries
drew out maps to travel to
whimsical angel pictures
where flowers met the dew.
I imagine a mermaids mission
toward the sea past the glen
my satchel is full
of notebooks held past pretend.
I seek whimsical angels
who watch over a babies footprints
keeping eye on the daylight
and the doves mournful relent.
Stay close beside an infants crib
ward off all danger
protecting unsuspecting infants
for a thousand and one years.
No dragons may enter
only song birds allowed
in a butterfly garden
tis a fairies lament rung stout.
Fairies guard the dandelion
and the twinkling stars
lest they fly away without us
and leave our outstretched arms.
Whimsical angel drawings
Another world outside my own
yet I listen so intently
for a land past my home.
Enchanted fairies sing songs
and beacon the moonlight
and if you close your eyes to listen
you'll hear a tender might.
Inspired by a faeries tenderness
attention to a needing land
a fairies flight returns predicted
to a believers outstretched hands.
Swans grow from goslings
birds from eggs
clumsy beginnings yes
lead to mysterious legs.
Bells chime
time to meet a magic maker
holding keys to lands
fore every single mystery partaker.
Amid the trembling roses
who meet a unicorns dream
rest assured a captains roar
will forever sing.
Never worry little princess
for a story of might
a note has been left by a mermaid
for a swan songs undying
and perhaps restless
flight.

"Poetry" by Mucha
Art Nouveau - Decorating Principles For Your Home By Mark Hostetler

If you are a fan of Alphonse Mucha or the many advertisements featuring scantily clad women on bicycles, you may find that Art Nouveau is the place to go for home design inspiration. Art Nouveau emerged in the 1890s as a counter to the heaviness of the Victorian style that abounded before that time. Art Nouveau was a less cluttered, lighter and freer form of expression in housing interiors.
Stained glass became popular as a design concept. An excellent example of this is the Tiffany lamp, a lamp with a stained glass shade. Stained glass' thicker lines and thinner detail is a common motif in Art Nouveau paintings, where a strong outline is complemented by detail within. While genuine Tiffany lamps are very expensive, there are many companies creating lamps in this style for reasonable prices. Stained glass was popular in other areas, such as window decoration and in mirrors.
Colors are muted, but provide quite a variety of combinations: the sombre greens (sage, olive), mustard yellow and many shades of brown. Pair these colours with various shades of purple and peacock blue.
Browns can be found in the parquet and marquet floors that were in vogue at the time. These were mosaics of wood done in geometric (parquet) or natural shapes (marquet). Walls can be painted in the above colors or papered, preferably with stylized floral motifs that were in vogue. Anything with tendrils will probably integrate easily into the look. Popular motifs are peacocks, pansies, wisteria and any kind of trailing vine. Windows can be hung about with curtains featuring Art Nouveau motifs.
Furniture should be curvy and incorporate some of the stylized nature designs that Art Nouveauis famous for. Look for wood inlaid with designs. There are a lot of opportunities to remake furniture with Art Nouveau motifs and decoration. Consult Art Nouveaubooks and online pictures to find a pattern that you can reproduce on your table, lamp or other accessory. Stylized fireplaces were popular at the time and are still reproduced today with floral motifs and whiplash lines.
Art can be in the form of poster prints. Many commercial posters produced in the era make beautiful and unusual decorations for the walls of your home. A vase or two of peacock feathers and, of course, plants and flowers scattered about the home will bring nature that much closer. Think exotic; Art Nouveau was in the period where people were greatly fascinated by 'The Orient' and far-off climes.
Art Nouveau Style:
-long, curved, whiplash lines
-stylized plants, especially flowers and vines
-depictions of women with long, artistically flowing hair
-inlaid wood, silver, semi-precious stones, glass
Sometimes it's more fun to re-create your own interpretation of Art Nouveau than to restrict yourself to decorations that you know are 'period'. A great Art Nouveau look can be created relatively easily and cheaply if you look for inexpensive replicas and reproductions, as well as using paint and stained glass to "art-nouveau" items. Look for that whiplash line and stylized florals and you'll be on the right track.

I Will Measure Happiness With My Eyes Closed - A Fairies Call
by Kathy Ostman-Magnusen
pretend
dear fairies
and start all over again.
And I won't ask you
if it's OK.
I won't ask anyone at all.
I will step out into that outside world
and hold a victory march
past all my false starts.
Camille and Lily
sacred souls
will meet me
there
and let me mend
my stolen heart.
Yet
I must admit it
in the end
that fantasy and pretend
cannot outlive the wounded lark.
Only wilting flowers
would understand that poem.
A poem considered
one who would close up
not bloom
and visit no one
go no where at all
like words gathered
resembling leaves in the fall.
If you see that sparrow
Remind her I am still waiting
and tell her to find me.
A feather in the skyline
tell her too
to send me her poems
when she feels empty.
I contemplate
those who still measure happy
wondering
if there is some kind of code
or justified routine
that meets that channel.
Maybe happiness is over rated.
Darkness requires a lot of alone time.
All my cruelties
so sincerely sorry.
Twas not till this moment
that I understood the consequence
of such failures.
Stopped only by me
with only me to blame
and like any delicate flowers I have known
I fold their wings gently
wishing I could dismiss it all
but of course
no.
Despite my efforts to see at times
I am left with the blindness of sight.
How far can I reach?
How much can be felt?
I am not sure.
But I will consider the day
measure it all with my eyes closed
Camille and Lily
fairies call
watch ore
and my fingertips
will measure my way
home.

A Story About a Fairy Who Never Found Herself at All
by Kathy Ostman-Magnusen
faltering fairy
Lily
expressing what she needed
and who she hoped she would be
by next Winter
and the Winter after that.
Too soon that story ended.
Calendars taken for granted
somehow
past what we all think and hope for
and past
what we think
we all mean
or at least what people talk about.
I saw her in the Summer
years ago now
discontent
no longer accepting
of her boundaries
ready to pursue lit candles
in honor of what was missing
from her limited
singing
life.
Roads ahead
would be painfully dusty
turns would bare no signs
no hints of
"Do Not Enter"
lest you lose your way
completely.
No mistakes displayed
to learn from
to feel chastened by
no
only
the emptiness
of an unmet climb.
Discarded
finally
boundaries from someone else's
pleasure
lessons from a book
she could no longer believe in.
Dinner set for one
strings
puppets
learn to dine
alone
or they will never meet their circumstances
or at least not well
self survival
never understood
For whatever hope
that Spring might have brought
flowers finally waking
despite their once frozen spaces
Lily
felt
decayed.
While measuring whatever could be
she forgot to measure
what had already been.
Storm clouds coming
and going
it really doesn't matter
no
not anymore.
There would be no traveling
no new sites to fly in.
There would be no dining out.
No galleries of passion
to understand
past
the glamour of magazines
and sights seen
on TV.
There would be no voyages
though her cage door
had been opened.
For despite what she had cried about
and claimed as her wanting
this flower
fairy
was simply too afraid
to make
yet another
failing
flower space.
Standing over other roses
last rites
deep breaths
those flowers lied.
Their colors change
after blooming
no matter the season
hues groomed
buds in vases
when gathered too soon
dry
and never bloom
at all.
So no..
Lily did not die
the assumed
conclusion
deep dark sighs.
She found herself
in new surroundings
true
but she was just too accustomed
to never following through
on her dream schemes.
