Winter Dog-Summer Dog

Living with Dogs All Year Long

When winter arrive, each of my dogs has a special way of enjoying it. Jenna dearly loves to eat great chunks of fresh snow. She literally savors it, and searches for fresh snow that is undisturbed, and you can see the enjoyment on her face when she eats it. (and no, she is a house dog, she has plenty of fresh water!)

Phoenix on the other hand loves to do the "Snow Angel" thing. She will spend a good deal of time each time she goes out, rolling and rolling in the snow. Another one of her favorite games is to run and give chase to the snowballs that I throw, burying her nose deep in the snow and snorting around after the elusive snowball (which of coursse falls apart upon impact)...sending great chunks of snow and ice flying...generally destroying the pristine appearance of the new fallen snow. If it weren't for the fact that she can not actually ever come up with something to bring back to me, I think it might be a good search and recue training tip...but as it is, I don't really use any commands for Phoenix when I throw snowballs, I just throw them. If she wants to she can run after them and try to find them but it is not a given..since she really cant find anything except the scent. It is interesting to watch her however!

Winter time is also Christmas time and of course shopping time. It you want to get some perfect gifts for dog lovers, this is the place.

On the Other Hand, when summer is here, my newfs spend the majority of their time just lying around the house in front of the fans, spending an inordinate amount of time sleeping. They do however LOVE to go on their daily walk, early in the morning or in the evening hours as the sun is setting. Sometimes, on especialy hot days, we take a late night stroll. One time on just such a stroll, we ran across a deer, who, startled, just stood and looked at us! WE (my newf and I) equally as startled, just stopped and stared, either of us making a move. I don't know if Jenna (the dog I was with at the time) even had a clue what the deer was. It only lasted a minute or two and then with a flash of her white tail, the doe disappeared into the darkness.

Visits to the DOG PARK are a great source of entertainment ay time. Unfortunately I live in a very tiny town so my DOG PARK bisits are few and far between and we have to drive a ways to get there.

Winter Time Baths are a PAIN

I am one of those people that do NOT wash their dogs every week unless absolutely necessary, I feel that it is hard on the coat, since it does remove the natural oils from the coat. (Have you ever noticed that a dog that is wet from going swimming dries twice as fast as a dog that is wet from being bathed??) So in the winter, the baths are few and far between. However, When "push comes to shove" and I can't stand the doggy body odor any more and the candles don't work either...well, then it's bath time. Phoenix has no objection whatsoever, she tries to climb into the shower with me on a regular basis! Jenna, on the other hand, hates getting into the tub and much prefers her "outdoor" grooming setup. So I give two different kinds of doggy baths in the winter...the real bath, in the tub, with a bucket to pour the rinse water over the dog....back breaking but gets 'em clean. Then there is the "spit bath" like my momma used to give me before we'd go in to a fancy restaurant to eat out....and that is what Jenna gets. It's an old trick I used to do back when I was showing dogs. She gets a spritz and a brushing, and the mist that I spritz her with is a really great homemade product. Just take one spray bottle and add in one half cup listerine mouthwash and 8 ounces of warm water, and as you brush, mist the dog lightly. Works great to take away body odor.
You can get more good advice from one of my ehow articles on how to bathe a dog HERE

Furthermore, the book DOGSHOWS101 also has great tips on everything about grooming and caring for the show dog.s coat. For a paperback copy of the book click HEREJust because you don't have a "show dog" doesn't necessarily mean anything! The tips in this book are suitable for ALL dog owners, regardless of what breed of dog you have. The point is that giving a HAIRY big dog a bath is much more difficult and time consuming that giving a NON hairy dog a bath The end result is what counts: a clean dog that you can bring into your house, a dog that is a joy to hug, kiss, and sleep in the same bed with!
