All About Mud Racing
Once known as the sport of farmers, mud racing is growing and gaining more respect from all over the US and even in Europe.
Mud racing got its start from people using their farm land, making a big mud puddle and playing around in their trucks. This is better known as mud bogging. People still do this today. If there's no swampy farm land to be found, anything wet will do. Just pay attention to the law and don't trespass. It's sort of a grudge match to see who can make through the big holes without getting stuck. This is where big tires come in handy. Lift kits help as well. The bigger the truck is not necessarilly better. Heavier trucks tend to get stuck more easily. A lifted Jeep, S-10, Toyota or Ranger are usually your best bet for this.
Apparently, one day someone decided that people should have races in this mud. My guess is they started out one at a time through the mud hole while someone kept track of how long it took to make it out. This is better known as mud racing. You can mud race anything from a 4 wheeler to a jacked up monster truck with military gears. The bigger the truck, the better and the deeper the mud, the funner!
As people mud raced, they started beefing up their trucks. It turned into a sport. The trucks got lower and faster and the mud got shallower. Then people started opening tracks and started offering money to winners. It became widespread. People started traveling to go to races. Organizations were formed and mud racing became sanctioned at some events.
The NMRO or National Mud Racing Organization is the most popular and wide spread mud racing Organization. They usually hold 3-4 races across the US each year.
The Differences in Extreme Truck Sports
All Truck Sports are NOT Created Equal
Just because a truck drives in the dirt, that doesn't mean they are all mud racing. Read about the differences and then watch them in action below.
1.Mud Racing- Also known as mud drags, mud racing is driving on a shallow track against others for money.
2.Mud Bogging- Mostly done for fun, mud bogging is the art of driving your truck through a deep mud pit. Get ready to get dirty! The ultimate goal is to go deep without getting stuck. Most mud racing tracks have a deep mud pit where you can "bogg" against others for cash. This is where mud racing began.
3.Off Road Racing- This is for the long haulers. Off road racing is done on a coarse. If you love catching sweet air, off roading is for you.
4.Monster Trucks- Monster truck racing is probably the most popular truck sport for spectators. These are not just any trucks though. These trucks are the biggest trucks ever. They usually compete in arenas by crushing cars, doing crazy donuts and trying not to roll.
5.Tough Trucks- I consider these mini monster trucks. They are usually found at monster truck shows and compete in a similar way as well. If you want to race a tough truck, find a truck that you can beat to death.

The most important part of the track is the guard rail. These keep the fans safe when the trucks get out of control. Most tracks have some sort of chain link fence set up on either or both sides of the track. This is where the fans hang out. Pull your truck up and hang out if you just want to watch before you try mud racing. You can usually bring your cooler and grill but ask at each track for their specific rules.
An exciting track will have 2 lanes for side by side racing.
