English and European Football known as (soccer)

My lens this time is about English and European football known as (soccer) here in the U.S.
It is fast becoming the most watched sport in history from around the world, over taking American Football known as (handball) to most other countries.
The Super Bowl (American Football) watched from around the world has fewer viewers than the Champions league (soccer) which is a competition made up of the top teams of various footballing countries.
But what's going on in my mind is, where did the name or word come from to call real football SOCCER...

Soccer V Football

Soccer

How in the world did we come up with the word (Soccer) for what is known around the world as FOOTBALL.
How come we call our National sport here in the states Football and yet it is not even played as football but moreover as Handball.
" Soccer V Football"
As I watch the game as I'm sure a lot of other people see the same thing I do, that "(Soccer) "FOOTBALL" as it is aptly named mostly played with the foot or the feet. That's the reason it was originally named football in the first place which was first introduced to the world by the English. Makes sense!!
Yes, you can Head the ball and even Knee, and Chest the ball, and the only 2 players on the field that can handle the ball legally are the goal keepers within a certain area of the pitch, park, field or what ever you call it.
The whole game of 90 minutes + stoppage time is mostly played with the "Ball" on the ground passing with the feet or "Foot" with the occasional illegal hand ball by the 20 players that do all the running around.
Now football has been known around the world for a long time in many other countries and they have kept the tradition alive by calling it football, even tho it may be called football in many other languages, and yet when it came here, we decided to call it soccer!! Why?
Who decided to change it and why? Kinda confusing to me...Anyone??
" Now about American "Football" (handball) even a suited up European version of Rugby.!!!!!
How did it get it's name as "Football" in this country when only the feet or "Foot" is used to score a field goal that's kicked periodically.
Why was it called football when most of the game is played throwing the ball with your hands and then running with the ball in your hands scoring a touch down with the ball in your hands. Didn't any one think of calling it "HANDBALL" or even Throw-Ball for pete's sake.
Doesn't or wouldn't that make more sense for people to comprehend, after all, the games are so different it's not funny.
There is no simularity what so ever, not even in the shape of the balls....
"Where am I going with this.!!!! Don't get me wrong, I love all team sports, but as my passion is English and Italian football (soccer), I still have a hard time understanding where the word Soccer came from to name what is known worldwide as "Football"...

By the way, I am a huge fan of Manchester united F.C. in England. I have been a passionate fan since the fifties and watched them go from strength to strength over the years. I have the United emblem tattooed on my chest, is that passion or what.!!!
They are as I said in my intro possibly the most respected and famous successful club in the history of the sport. They have won more trophies than any-other club to-date.
