Coffee Mug, Cocoa Mug, Soup Mug, Milk Mug... or a Mug to Hold Pencils!

Mugs. Ceramic, stoneware, plastic, tin, paper... They can hold your morning coffee, hot cocoa with marshmallows, savory soup, or milk for your cookies. Or, you can keep a few on your desk or counter to hold your pens, pencils, and markers.

How did mugs come to be?

In the early times, maybe just a carved out piece of stone or a chunk of wood hollowed out. Or, in the islands, half of a coconut shell.

Then, someone discovered pottery-- ceramics and kiln-firing. They learned how to fasten a handle on it. They learned how to decorate it with paints and glazes.

Even later, the art of glass-blowing brought new techniques of producing mugs.

--And, in the 20th century, plastics were discovered. Soon, everything from kids' "sippy-mugs" to Tupperware mugs were being produced.

Mugs by the Bay .... eBay, that is...

I've watched the changing items here--and for some reason MUGS MOVE FAST! So if you don't already have an eBay account, I'd advise signing up for one here... so you can grab those mugs when they fly through!

Mug Evolution

At first, most families had an assortment of mugs in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Each mug was created by an artist, a craftsman... Each mug was a one-of-a-kind production. This probably was the start of the first "mug collection"--but for the practical benefit of having a container when needed. Folks would buy their mugs one at a time... when the occasion arised or when one struck their fancy. Over the years, they'd amass a nice collection of mugs. Also, occasionally, one of the mugs would break and be assigned to the junk pile (or maybe kept around to hold other stuff).

Archeologists find these when they are doing their digs at old civilization sites. They make for an interesting commentary about who owned the mug and what it was used for.

When potters and ceramics workers (and later plastics workers) discovered how to make molds, they didn't have to worry about the work involved with creating "one-of-a-kind" mugs. They could "mass-produce" the mugs--still charging the same or a bit lower price for their creation, but making a nicer profit on the item when it sold.

This mass-production of mugs (like the mass production of anything) catered a lot to everyone--and at first, the wealthy would buy immense sets of table-ware--including the mugs and cups along with the plates, bowls, serving trays, and other accessories. The wealthy could present a table of uniform decoration for their guests. Eventually, everyone could have a 4-person, 6-person, 8-person, 10-person setting of table-ware--with the uniform simularity for everyone's table setting.

Now, we've come complete circle.

Now, having a variety of mugs in different shapes and sizes represents the individuality of the person who owns them. Some of the mugs may have been bought at a vacation-spot--and whenever the person uses that mug, fond memories of that vacation are brought back. Some mugs have pictures or designs of things or places that a person would like to aspire to. Some mugs have just a "comfortable" and pleasing design--color and shape--and just beg to be part of your collection. Some mugs are the tchotchkis that are given out by real-estate companies, high-tech companies for their employees (5-year service award?), or for wooing customers.

So, the variety is endless--and you can have fun making your own collection and creating ways to use mugs.

Mugs Can Dress Up Your Cubicle or Desk or Kitchen Counter While Storing Your Tools!

Well, you probably wouldn't want to do use the high-tech, insulated aluminum/stainless-steel/plastic mugs for keeping your stash of pens and markers--they are best for hot or cold beverages. But any other mugs are fair game.

Whether you store your pens, pencils, or markers in them or use them for keeping your business cards, your paper-clips, and report binder-clips... mugs are useful for this. So, maybe it makes sense to have more than one mug on your desk, eh? (They are also helpful for when you get unexpected company and the breakroom doesn't have paper or styrofoam cups for your guest's coffee--You can break out one of your "extras" and be a great host!)
