Muhammad Ali at a Glance

Muhammad Ali biography and other important facts.

Muhammad AliMuhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942) is a retired American boxer and former three-time World Heavyweight Champion and winner of an Olympic Light-heavyweight gold medal. In 1999, Ali was crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and the BBC.

Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He was named after his father, Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr., who was named for the 19th century Muhammad Aliabolitionist and politician Cassius Clay. Ali changed his name after joining the Nation of Islam in 1964 and subsequently converted to Islam in 1975.

Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942. His father, Clay Sr., painted billboards and signs, and his mother, Odessa Grady Clay, was a household domestic. Although Clay Sr. was a Methodist, he allowed Odessa to bring up both Clay boys as Baptists.

Ali dropped out of Louisville Central High, a local basketball power, finishing 369th of 391 seniors in the class of 1960, and often traveling to fight on weekends. A principal named Atwood argued in his favor, stating to his colleagues that the boy should be given a Certificate of Attendance, given that "...one day he'll be making more money than everyone in this room." Your credibility was shot when the best you could meniton was Jack Johnson. And the latter change of postion is called "conversion;" we have that in Christianity also. And Ali wasn't lying about Joe Frazier - her was very, very dumb...at about the IQ level of a gorilla.

I wish someone would expose Ali for the phony he really was and is....I am a big boxing fan and I know the history extremely well going back to Jack Johnson who is a much more impressive figure than Ali.
Ali was a great great fighter for sure but the person is a different story.
Example # 1: Right after he was drafted he was interviewed and he did not have anything to say about freedom or racial issues, all he could talk about is why should he have to go since the government takes so much from him via taxes. It was all about him BUT soon after Malcom X (who I respect) got a hold of him and suddenly Ali is a Muslim fighting for freedom - TOTAL PHONY!
Example #2: Before one of the fights with Joe Frazier, in front of many cameras he pulled out a rubber gorilla and started hitting it saying it was Joe and in so many words calling him a dumb ape - PATHETIC! To this day, almost 40 years later Joe Frazier has not forgotten this terrible behavior. Ali was NOT A GREAT MAN...not close...

A nice tribute to a really great guy. From being a cocky young champ, he grew into a very nice considerate caring guy. Lived close to him in Indiana (he lives in Southern Michigan) but never had the chance to meet him.

Great lens. I have created a Muhmammad Ali forum for the purposes of discussion and debate about Boxing's greatest exponent. I'd be honoured if you'd click here to check it out.

Wonderful lens on a great man. Violent in the ring but so kind outside of it. Thanks for portraying him on this lens.
