What Goes On Under The Mulberry Tree

I have a big Mulberry tree in my yard and right now it is loaded with big, fat, juicy mulberries. Mulberries are good to eat, although not my favorites, but they are dropping all over my flower garden which is pretty messy! I don't complain, though, because there is so much life going on in and around that tree that I wouldn't give it up for anything. At the moment a pair of Western Kingbirds, a pair of orioles, several black cowbirds and sparrows are all nesting in that tree. Bluebirds are nearby and spend a lot of time setting in the branches. Butterflies are abundant with all that fruit laying around on the ground. Let's take a closer look at what's going on under my Mulberry tree.

Birds Who Live Here

As I sit on the little bench under the mulberry tree, the first bird I hear is the Western Kingbird. They are by far the noisiest birds here. As soon as someone comes near the tree, they start chattering loudly - warning me away. Occasionally I hear the Orioles, but they quietly go about their business and I only have a vague idea where their nest is hidden. Next winter, when all the leaves are gone, there it'll be in plain sight and I wonder why I couldn't see it before. As I sit quietly, the Bluebirds will perch along the lower branches watching the ground intently for the worms and insects that are abundant under the tree. A pair of Eastern Phoebes , nesting under the house eaves join in the feast under the mulberry tree.
Oh, and how can I forget the most vocal of all - the Mockingbird . As he goes through all his different songs, I'm fooled every time!
After the leaves have fallen for winter, I'm always astonished at the number of nests that I can see in the branches of my mulberry tree.

Just About The Birds

The National Geographic Bird Book is my personal favorite bird guide. The Backyard Birdsong Guide is a handy way to learn to identify all the birdsongs. Don't forget a house for the bluebirds, feeder for the orioles (after the mulberries are gone) and who can resist this little plush kingbird?

What's This Critter Feeding on the Mulberries?

I found another creature chowing down on the Mulberries. And by the looks of these hands, she's had a plenty! Yep, I can always find the grandkids under the mulberry tree when they're ripe. They love 'em as much as the birds do!

Mulberry Recipes

What Am I Going To Do With All These Mulberries!

I think Mulberries are a little bland all by themselves, but they pair up really good with other fruits. This Cherry/Mulberry Crumble is a snap to make and is really delicious.

Cherry/Mulberry Crumble

1 can tart cherries, drained
1 cup fresh mulberries

Mix together in microwavable 8x8 pan.

Topping:
1/2 c. margarine or butter
1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. quick oats

Cut together until crumbly. Sprinkle over the fruit in pan. Microwave for 5 minutes.

Grow Your Own Mulberry Tree

If you have space, a mulberry tree is a great addition to your yard. Mulberry trees attract a large number of birds which feed on the fruit or insects around the fruit and birds love to nest in mulberry trees. During the spring and summer months, the busiest place in your yard will be that mulberry tree!
