The only college-level "mule school" in the United States is run out of the Agricultural & Natural Resources Department.

Queen Valley Mule Ranch

Steve Edwards is prominent in the mule world, and trains not only at his own Queen Valley Ranch, but also as part of the Pierce College "mule school." I've taken classes from Mr. Edwards. He knows his stuff, gets right down in the circular corral with you and your mule, and has a heck of a sense of humor.

Diamond Creek Ranch

R&M Gaited Mules

From the website: "A gaited mule is any mule that has a smooth gait other than a walk, and one which is distinct from a trot. Some gaits are; single-foot, fox-trot, rack, running walk, stepping pace, paso fino, and other smooth gaits, whatever you might call them.
Whatever the gait may be called, its primary virtue is smoothness. The gaited mule (or horse, for that matter) can be ridden farther without discomfort from the bouncing one experiences at a trot, and at a more manageable pace than a canter. A gaited mule is great for trail riding, for obvious reasons."

UC Davis Horse Barn

From the website: "The Department of Animal Science Horse Barn has been a mainstay of the University of California, Davis since its foundation in the early 1910s. The Horse Barn began as a carriage house for draft horses and mules and later became a successful Thoroughbred breeding operation in the 1930s. It has, recently, become a promising American Quarter Horse and American Paint Horse breeding operation today. The Horse Barn strives to educate its students about all aspects of equine reproduction via hands-on experience. Today, the barn houses four AQHA stallions and a world champion Mammoth Jack. We welcome visitors and are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm."

Dr. Robert M. Miller

A veterinarian and equine behaviorialist, Dr. Miller is legendary for promoting the proper methods for imprinting newborn equines, including mules. I was privileged to meet Dr. Miller during a training session for a problem miniature mule adopted by the Millers. That little pistol was as like to kick out at you as nip you, but by the end of the training session with Steve Edwards of Queen Valley Mule Ranch, he was trotting politely and mannerly, pulling a little cart and looking way too cute for his history and prior disposition. Any or all of Dr. Miller's books are recommended reading for mule people.
