Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus

Long before "multitool" became a household word, we had Swiss Army knives. Dating from 1897, this go-anywhere, do-anything tool is a pocket knife gone wild. Scouts and outdoorsmen have known and trusted this brand for years. From the simplest Swiss Army Classic pocket knife to the Swiss Army Champion Plus, there's a model to meet anyone's needs.

The Swiss Army Champion Plus pocket knife goes beyond the usual hiking, camping, and fishing usefulness. Sure, you can use the hook disgorger to rescue the hook from the fish you just caught, measure that fish with the ruler, and clean it with the fish scaler. Then you can saw some kindling for the fire to cook it, and use the tweezers to pick out the splinter you picked up gathering the wood. The can opener will make short work of that can of beans to go with the fish. Pop the cap off a cold one with the bottle opener. Or maybe you prefer a little white wine with your fish -- there's a corkscrew, too. After dinner, sit back and use the handy toothpick to pick the fish bones from your teeth.

But that's just the beginning. The Champion Plus has a total of 30 handy tools, all in a package just 3-1/2 inches long. A couple of the more unusual items included are a sewing needle and a ball point pen. Because the pen is pressurized, ink stays near the tip and ready to write, even if it's been riding upside down in your pocket. Click on the link below to see the list of all 30 Swiss Army implements in this pocket multitool.

Leatherman Pocket Tool

Leatherman New Wave Multitool

Leatherman multitoolMaybe 30 tools is more than you ever need in your pocket. The Leatherman New Wave pocket tool offers 18 easy-access tools in a 4-inch, 8.5-ounce stainless steel package that will handle most jobs on the fly. Recently redesigned to be stronger than ever, this tool will take the punishment and keep on going.

The New Wave multitool comes with a leather sheath that can be quite stiff when new, but with some leather conditioning and time in use, it can become formed to the tool and be as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans. Another thing to be aware of is that the bit drivers are not standard size, so any additional bits you buy must be from Leatherman.

The Leatherman New Wave's two knife blades, the saw, and the file are accessible from the outside of the tool in the closed position. The knife blades can be opened with one hand (if you're right-handed), and they lock into place. Rotate the handles open to create a smooth, comfortable handle for the other tools inside.

Just a few of the useful tools included are two pliers, wire cutters, two knives, scissors, two files, and bit drivers. Take a look and see what other functions the Leatherman New Wave can offer you.

Gerber Pocket Tool

Gerber Crucial MultiTool

Gerber Crucial toolIf you don't need an entire toolbox in your pocket, the Gerber Crucial Tool is the multitool to carry. At just four inches long and five ounces, you'll think it's just a pocket knife when you're carrying it, but when you have a basic task to do, out pops just the right tool.

This snazzy green eight-function pocket tool does the job in style. The butterfly-opening handle is comfortably shaped, and the tools all lock in place so there's no finger pinching. It's constructed of stainless steel for long-lasting good looks and usefulness.

The tools in the Gerber Crucial Tool are large enough to function just like stand-alone tools. Users like the squared-off full-sized knife blade -- it's safer than a sharply pointed one. And it's like getting two knives in one, with its half-serrated and half-fine-edge blade. Other tools include two screwdrivers, a wire cutter, and a bottle opener. Toss the Crucial Tool in the glove box or clip it to your belt; you'll be glad it's there when having just the right basic tool is, well, crucial.

Credit Card Multi Tool

Tool Logic Credit Card Companion

mini pocket toolYes, there's even a multitool for the minimalist. Tool Logic Credit Card Companion gives you the basics in a slim, barely-there plastic case. Just bigger than a credit card, the tool includes a two-inch serrated knife blade, 8x magnifying lens, compass, flat screwdriver, tweezers, toothpick, and combination can and bottle opener/awl.

This is the pocket tool to have when you don't intend to be Mr. Fixit, but don't want to be without a few tools "just in case." At just 1.3 ounces, you'll forget it's in your pocket until you need it. Then when the need arises, you can be the hero and save the day.

At such a small size, you can't expect these tools to be up to a regular-sized job, but in a pinch, they'll get you through. The serrated knife, though, is sharp and tough, and will cut through almost anything once you get accustomed to holding it without a long handle. And you'll want to remove the knife before trying to use the compass, as too much metal can interfere and give you a false reading. Be aware, the online description of this multitool mentions scissors, but the latest model does not include them.

Tuck the Tool Logic Credit Card Companion in your wallet and always be prepared. You may walk out of the house without your pocket knife, but you won't forget your wallet.
