Marketing Effectively in a Multichannel World

The World Is Changing. Today, Marketing = Multichannel. In order to be heard above the din of the crowd, it's important to spread the word in every channel possible. Direct mail, email, radio, television, direct sales, you name it.

Clearly, some businesses are better off focusing on certain channels above others, so I'd like to hear your thoughts.

What kinds of tools, resources, ideas, or strategies are available for businesses to establish a presence and push a message that resonates in every channel?

-Websites
-Books
-BLOGS
-Technology
-Anything else you can think of

Help me make this a great resource!

Thank you,
Jon Schlinkert

What is Multichannel Marketing?

According to Wikipedia

Multichannel Marketing is marketing using many different marketing channels to reach a customer. In this sense, a channel might be a retail store, a web site, a mail order catalogue, or direct personal communications by letter, email or text message. The objective of the company doing the marketing is to make it easy for a consumer to buy from them in whatever way is most appropriate.

To be effective multichannel marketing needs to be supported by good supply chain management systems, so that the details and prices of goods on offer are consistent across the different channels. It might also be supported by detailed analysis of the return on investment from each different channel, measured in terms of customer response and conversion of sales. Some companies target certain channels at different demographic segments of the market or at different socio-economic groups of consumers.

For example: The American retailer J.Crew, who sell their products through retail stores, through the web, and through catalogues is an example of a firm who uses multichannel marketing.

Hi Jon,

This is a great info lens. However don't you think by doing multichannel marketing you'll be spreading your resources too thin on too many avenues?
