Thoughts on Oral Tradition as an Act of Worship
A few weeks ago in our worship services we focused on the subject of private worship. . . worship that takes place on a personal level, just you and God. As I contemplated this topic over the last couple of weeks, a thought kept coming back to me about an aspect of family worship that seems strongly lacking in our culture. It is an element of worship that I rarely hear taught - an element that is infrequently discussed for whatever reason. Yet, it is an element of worship that was the backbone of Jewish religious history throughout biblical times. It is the element of oral history - the passing down of biblical truth, the passing of the record of God's relationship to man by telling the stories to each generation. Deuteronomy chapter 6 is the ultimate passage for understanding the importance of this oral tradition. I encourage you to read the whole chapter. . and meditate on the concepts and truths that are contained within these important words. This critical passage of Scripture outlines the strategic importance of oral tradition - of passing along the truth of God's Word from generation to generation. The example that is used in verses 20-23 shows us that it was a technique that was used to convey not only relevant historical information, but valuable spiritual training as well.
The question certainly comes to mind as to why we have largely abandoned this method of transmitting spiritual truth. Perhaps in this age of sophistication - books, magazines, journals, the internet, books on CD, radio, television, etc. - we view oral communication as archaic and trite. Perhaps we are just lazy - after all, it's much easier for a parent to pop in a "Veggie Tales" DVD than to sit down and creatively tell the stories of the Bible.
I would contend that the issue is much more important than many would think. I would argue that oral tradition - that process of passing along the reality of God's dealing with us - is just as important today as it was six thousand years ago. I would argue that perhaps we as parents have also failed to provide an oral tradition of what God has done in OUR lives, by telling our children. How many parents take the time to share the story of their own spiritual journey with their children? How many have shared the stories of God's working in their lives? Of answered prayers? That may be exactly what our children need to hear. They need to see the reality of God in our lives so they can begin to recognize the working of God in their own.

4 integrating Multimedia in Worship
What are the tools you are going to need to put together a multimedia program for your church? Here's a list of "must haves" for you.
- screen - can't do much without it. . . unless you have a large, white wall
- projector - this comes in many colors and flavors. . . very important to pick the right projector for your application! Also, be careful, you may need to replace the lens, which can be very expensive
- computer - you will need a good, up-to-date computer with dual-display capabilities. Make sure the video card has this capability. Get a very large hard drive. . . video files take up an enormous amount of space!
- Two Computer monitors. . . one to see what the congregation sees, the other to control the worship software program (see next point)
- Worship Software. . . OK, don't hate me for this, but dump Powerpoint and get yourself one of the better worship software packages. It's the only way to go. Something like Easyworship, MediaShout, or SundayPlus for example. There are others that are good as well. Make sure that the program supports text over video.
