What are Multiple Intelligences and Why is it Important to Know?

"Multiple Intelligences" is a learning styles theory created by Howard Gardner, a Professor and Psychologist from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

As a teacher, learner and parent, it's my favorite learning styles theory because of its focus on numerous styles. Most theories only address 2 or 3 (e.g. visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles), but I agree with Gardner that there are many more.

In the 1980's, Gardner was bothered by the fact that "intelligence" was narrowly viewed and measured (IQ). Intelligence was largely associated with language and logic ability, but Gardner saw it more broadly. He said originally that there are seven "intelligences," or areas in which an individual can be smart, show strength, learn best, and demonstrate their learning. These multiple intelligences are:

1. Bodily-kinesthetic
2. Interpersonal
3. Intrapersonal
4. Linguistic
5. Logical-mathematical
6. Musical
7. Spatial

He later added an eighth (naturalist) and has speculated about at least one more (spiritual).

Here, I briefly describe each of these intelligences, introduce you to the debate that surrounds the concept of learning styles, share the learning styles evaluator that I created (so you can discover your own style) and point you toward additional resources to help you learn more.

But first, why is it important to know about your learning style, or preferred way of learning?

Well, it's important because you learn every day in many ways, informally and formally. When you know how you learn, you can learn more effectively. You can also enjoy it a lot more! For example, if you're an interpersonal learner, but you sit alone at a desk all day, you probably won't like it much!

It's also important if you're a parent or a teacher (including being a homeschooler) because you teach everyday in these roles. It's important to know the learning styles of your kids so they can learn most effectively. When you know how your kids learn, you can teach to those different styles and allow your kids to demonstrate their learning in multiple ways as well.

So, enjoy! And be sure to share what your learning style is in the poll below!

Multiple Intelligences

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

This picture is kind of funny to me because it doubly illustrates bodily-kinesthetic learning. Not only is the child working with his hands, which is the classic definition of kinesthetic learning, but he's also building a hand.

So, as you can tell from the picture, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence is about having strengths in the area of hands-on learning. It has to do with learning through bodily movement, physical experience, or the sense of touch.

Interpersonal Intelligence

Interpersonal intelligence is learning through a social experience with other people. It's about interacting with others, being involved in a group and talking about things.

Do you ever feel like you need to "talk it out" with someone to come to an understanding of something? If so, you might be an interpersonal learner.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

Just like the image of "The Thinker" shows, intrapersonal intelligence is learning through a solitary experience with yourself, or within yourself. It's about self-reflection, thinking, pondering and processing.

This is one of my strongest learning styles. I'm a very introspective person and I love to quietly process things internally before I share anything externally. I love to meditate, read, write and reflect. I also love personal growth and spirituality, which is another characteristic of intrapersonal learners.

Linguistic Intelligence

I love this picture! To me it shows that this woman just loves words!

That's what the linguistic intelligence is all about - - learning through words, both spoken and written. Learning through the spoken word is usually referred to as auditory learning. Learning through the written word is often called print learning.

Print learning is another one of my strongest learning styles. If you've read any of my other pages, you'll know I'm a total word nerd! I love to write, read, take notes, process information through writing, and play with words.

Mathematical Intelligence

Mathematical intelligence is also called "logical-mathematical" and has to do with learning through numbers, patterns, reasoning or systematic or scientific investigation. It's about order, analyzing, making connections, categorizing, organizing and figuring things out.

I kind of see this style represented by the math and science geek in school!

This is a strong area for me as well, although not as high as print learning and introspective learning.

Musical Intelligence

Musical, or musical-rhythmic, intelligence is learning through music and rhythm (that's a little obvious). People who learn this way love sound. They might always be listening to music, they probably play musical instruments and they might tap or sing or hum while they work and learn.

Naturalist Intelligence

I love this picture! It shows the natural curiosity of kids and it shows it in a natural environment. For someone with a naturalist intelligence, this love of nature and this curiosity never goes away. Someone with a naturalist intelligence loves learning through nature or through an experience in the natural world. They love investigating and studying things in nature.

This is another area of strength for me. I feel a connection to nature and love being in and around it.

Spatial Intelligence

Spatial intelligence is about learning spatially, or through pictures. It's what's usually called visual learning. Visualization, imagination, maps, photographs, videos and multi-media presentations are important for visual learners.

The Multiple Intelligences Debate

Learning Styles Don't Exist

As I mentioned in the introduction, there is a debate surrounding the concept of multiple intelligences and other learning styles, especially in the scholarly world. This video expresses the view that multiple intelligences, or learning styles, don't exist in the way that most people understand them to exist.

Multiple intelligences are valid.

bloomingrose says:

Different people respond to information differently, me I am an auditory processor.

miaponzo says:

I definitely think MI is real, I have studied it in some depth, and I love the idea. In fact, I love the idea so much, that I'm actually planning on opening an MI school someday in Kuwait (God Willing)...

bethd821 says:

I definitely think multiple intelligences are valid. I see it everyday.

KarenTBTEN says:

Yes, people have very different ways of learning, and sometimes, for genetic reasons, a child (or adult) might have be well above the norm or average in some areas, and well beow in others. It's important to see what's really there.

JoyfulPamela says:

People definately have different ways of learning and expressing knowledge.

Multiple intelligences or learning styles are just a bunch of nonsense.

How Do You Use Multiple Intelligences in Your Teaching or Learning?

Share the ways that you individualize instruction if you're a homeschooling parent or a teacher. And share how you learn best according to your learning style.

Well. while I'm no longer directly teaching now (I'm an Academic Supervisor now).. I have always taught with MI in mind. I always approach everything from a multifaceted viewpoint so that no matter what learning style my students have, they will definitely grasp whatever I'm teaching. :) Great lens!

Lovely way to represent the theory in pictures. I guess I learn best visually..:)

I was introduced to the concept of Multiple Intelligences when I worked as a Special Needs Teaching Assistant and have been a big fan of Howard Gardner ever since! Great lens which explains Multiple Intelligences in a very easy to understand way - blessed by a SquidAngel :)

Great lens. I find this fascinating. I would say that I am print-linguistic but with a healthy dash of visual, some logical and some musical.

Great lens. Very interesting. I am definitely "logical-mathematical"

I give my kids a variety of ways to create a product for a project. They can write it, interview people, video tape, write a play, record music, create a sports game. Kids are infinitely creative... and enthusiastic when they have choices!

Well I am definitely kinesthetic - just as well it is not audio as I have partial hearing loss ;)

Very good lens and one that every parent should see. (BTW congrats on getting your wings!)
