Why Multi-tasking is a waste of time!

Project managers (or anyone with a lot on their plate)! Attention please.

Getting things/projects completed AND on time/target, can be a pain! I found out a few years ago how difficult it was when I started a new project. My website programmer went horribly over-time... I was so stressed out.

I had so many things to do, write articles, design templates, learn new software, find out about copyright stuff, patents and trademarks while still holding a full-time job! Wow! Talk about multi-tasking nightmare!

I was trying to save money by not hiring a project manager....

In the end, it cost me heaps and my project flopped! Yikes!

Let me suggest to you that there is a BETTER WAY!

Why Multi-tasking is a waste of time

Reading about multi-tasking now.

You must have heard that it is a good thing to be able to multi-task. You know, juggling so many things and/or people/appointments. Stressful isn't it?

This book says that it is a waste of time!

It gives the example of three projects, each requiring three weeks to complete.

Project A uses the new concept (actually, it is not new but newly re-introduced in this book) of focusing on one, instead of spreading yourself too thin.

This project is completed in 9 weeks.

Projects B and C are started using multi-tasking and other approach. Guess when they were completed and what were their results...

You can find a FREE copy of this book by using the special promo code `free'.

When you know what you want to achieve in your life, ie you have done some thinking about the goals which you would like to achieve, then it is time to narrow it down. Focus on the most important (not urgent; urgent and important are different) thing to do, to help you to achieve success.

Being present in the NOW, having your sights on your goal is critical. For example, if you play golf, your target is to get your ball in the hole. You examine the hole from your position and bring your swing in line with the line of focus to the hole.

Ask me about the Magic Golf lesson later....

If you were distracted, eg you were concerned about looking good, feeling self conscious of other people watching you play, you try to act according to what you imagine a golf player should look like, or you were thinking of something that happened at home or at work ...

Then hey man ...guess what. You'd look good but no ball in hole!

So coming back to multi-tasking, sorry I digress...

Having too many things on your plate ...means you get to finish none completely and definitely not in a timely way. Decide what priorities they fall in, eg Class A meaning must do today, Class B if can do today, would be great ... Class C anytime is OK.

So if you have 2 class A items for the day, you may choose to start the one which is the most important first or you start the one which is the easiest to get started (to give you some momentum) to continue.

Try it and see. Have the guts to say `No' if people keep pushing things to you.

Remember, you're not an octopus with 8 or a centipede with 100 legs! You only have 2 arms and 2 legs and ONE head....
