Honouring Mothers Everywhere

Mothers play a very special role in all of our lives - they love and nurture us, helping us to find our way through our childhood and teenage years (which can often be quite tumultuous) to an adulthood where we can rely on ourselves, our thoughts and opinions and be the type of person we always wanted to be.

They hold our hands and hug us when we need to be comforted, they show pride in our achievements, they give us the odd firm word when required to keep us on the straight and narrow, and they love us unconditionally.

No matter where you live - no matter what culture you belong to or religious beliefs you have, mothers are honoured all over the world - in different ways, but they are honoured nonetheless. Mother's Day, in one form or another, is celebrated in practically every country in the world, albeit at different times of the year.

This page is in honour of mothers everywhere!

Spain

8 December 2011

In Spain, Mother's Day is celebrated on 8 December every year, which is also the "Feast of the Immaculate Conception" and is therefore closely associated with Mother Mary - the mother of Jesus. Like many countries around the world, it is customary for children to give cards, chocolates, flowers and other presents to their mothers.

United Kingdom and Ireland - Mothering Sunday

18 March 2012

Mothering Sunday occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which falls on 18 March in 2012. It can fall at the earliest on 1 March and at the latest on 4 April.

It is believed that Mothering Sunday originated from the Christian practice of visiting one's mother church once a year in the 16th century. Young men and women employed as domestics and farm hands were given leave by their masters for that weekend and would visit their families. Therefore mothers would be reunited with their children once a year.

Today, Mothering Sunday is used to show appreciation to one's mother as it is in most places across the world - mothers are often given cards, flowers and gifts and excused from their day-to-day tasks around the house, as other members of the household will do them instead.

France and Sweden

29 May 2011

In France, Mother's Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of May, which is 30 May in 2010. The custom in France is a little different to the countries above in that children usually present a cake to their mother which is in the shape of a bunch of flowers. This is usually done at a family dinner in honour of their mother.

In Sweden Mother's Day is also celebrated on the last Sunday in May and is a family holiday. The Swedish Red Cross sells small plastic flowers leading up to Mother's Day and the money is used to help needy mothers and their children.
