Ode to Mum

After mornings spent chasing friends, having lots of fun,

From the woods in the park on home you would run,

Past the old lazy river and the fields lush and green,

Through the gap in the hedge you'd squeeze in-between.

No sense of time "Am I early or late,

Will my dinner be dried up and cold on the plate?"

Stopping at a grassy verge you'd bend down pick the flowers,

Gathering Buttercups and Daisies for what must have seemed like hours.

Holding them so tightly as you ran back to your house,

Opening the door you crept in like a mouse.

There stood in the kitchen still beavering away,

Your mum stands cooking cleaning with no time spare to play,

Seeing you she'd grumble "dinners been ready now for hours!"

Then mum would see clasped in your hands this tiny bunch of flowers.

A small smile would appear, hugging you so tight,

For in this smallest gesture 'you know you'd got it right'.

It's not about expensive gifts, that come to great amounts,

Just take the time, think what's right, cus it's the thought that counts.

Which memory do you think your mum will hold so dear?

When looking back remembering, she'll cry a happy tear,

A small child gathering flowers, their own time they had spent,

This gesture of pure love from child to mother sent.
