What is Oktoberfest?
Oktoberfest is, quite simply, the world's biggest party. It is a grand festival held in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, every summer in late September/early October, for a period of just over two weeks. The fest dates back to 1810 but has been cancelled on several occasions due most frequently to war. 2008 is the 175th occasion on which Oktoberfest has taken place.

How did it come in to being?
It was to commemorate the marriage of Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen that the people of Bavaria were invited to a party at hwat has since become known as Theresienwiese, "Therese's Fields." That first festival closed with the running of horse races and that remained an integral part of Oktoberfest for some time. Horse racing no longer, however, plays any part in the celebrations.
