Muppets Characters

As a child, I adored watching The Muppet Show and loved its characters. And I'm not the only one! This group of beloved ragamuffin puppet characters were created by Jim Henson in 1955 and have been adored by people all over the world ever since.

They first appeared in 1976 in The Muppet Show, and since then have been featured in their own movies, songs, tv shows, and more, making them a true cultural phenomenon. Although the Muppet Show aired its final episode in 1981, their influence has resonated throughout our culture and is still very strong today. Nowadays there are muppet t-shirts, muppet games, muppet songs, muppet toys... the list goes on! Growing up with The Muppets' nutty adventures was awesome! :)

Muppet Cast

Muppet names and pictures

The muppet cast included a bunch of characters for each show, with the most notable being Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, Scooter, Sam the Eagle, the Swedish Chef, Rowlf the Dog, Dr Bunsen Honeydew, Dr Strangepork, Beaker, Camilla, Janice, Zoot, and the adorable grumpy old men Statler and Waldorf who sit in the box seat at every show and heckle the performers.

Behind the Muppets were the talented puppeteers who made them come to life, including Jim Henson (of course), Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Dave Goelz, Louise Gold, Steve Whitmore and more. These talented puppeteers often played more than one muppet.

Each episode of The Muppet Show took one week to complete

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy

Kermit the Frog is director and host of the Muppet Show. He serves as the main protagonist of the series, specials, and films, and is performed by Jim Henson. Kermit is undoubtedly the most popular of the Muppets, and is the responsible leader of the production - hosting the show and dealing with the multitude of crazy problems that occur backstage. I think my favourite thing about Kermit is how he waves his arms in the air and cries "yaaaaaaaaay" after introducing an act :) When questioned about his relationship with Miss Piggy, who is clearly obsessed with him, Kermit tries to remain professional, but who can say?

Miss Piggy is a glamorous and self-centered diva pig in dual pursuit of stardom and Kermit. Their relationship is very on again-off again, but that doesn't deter her! Absolutely convinced that she's destined for stardom, nothing is going to stand in Miss Piggy's way. Her public face is the soul of feminine charm, but she can instantly fly into a violent rage whenever she thinks she's insulted or thwarted, which includes her famous Karate Chop!

Gonzo Muppet

Gnzo the GreatGonzo, also known as Gonzo the Great, is one of Jim Henson's most lovable muppets! I used to have a Gonzo toy that I took everywhere with me, and Gonzo the Great always got the biggest laugh when I watched the Muppets. This is probably because Gonzo is not a recognizable form of any animal on earth! A total misfit, even Gonzo doesn't really know what he is. With his long hooked nose, blue fur, and bug eyes, his daredevil antics always make the Muppet show that much more endearing. Each opening sequence of the Muppet Show ended with Gonzo playing the trumpet and something strange happening each time, like an exploding trumpet (although in the first season, he would try and comically fail to hit the O in 'show').

Many of his wild stunts go wrong, which only adds to his charm as his attitude remains steadfastedly optimistic which is why I love him!

Beaker Muppet

Beaker MuppetBeaker was always another of my very favourite Muppet show characters. The shy lab assistant of Bunsen Honeydew, Beaker is always in a state of shock and panic, evidenced by his big googly eyes and shock of sticking up red hair. Poor Bunsen always took the worst of the unfortunate accidents in the lab, which included him being blown up, electrified, or losing bits of his body!

Always nervous, Beaker communicates with high pitched squeaky noises like 'meep!', and is such a lovable cutie that he remains a Muppet favourite today.

In a 2004 Internet poll sponsored by the BBC, Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew were voted Britain's favourite cinematic scientists, even beating Dr Spock!

Muppets Waldorf and Statler

Our favourite grumpy old men!

Statler and WaldorfThese two cranky, disagreeable old men are a Muppet staple. Sitting in their box above the audience, they are regularly featured during the Muppets various performances heckling the stage.

Appearing in every show, Statler and Waldorf especially liked to trash talk Fozzie when he was doing his stand up routines. Their disparaging comments and feisty backtalk aside, they were always there in every show, sitting in their special spot and having a great time.

Statler and Waldorf have made a variety of appearances on other shows, including Family Guy, The Cosby Show, and The Tonight Show.

Swedish Chef Muppets

Swedish ChefThe most famous Swedish Chef in the world would have to be this funny Muppet! Created to be a light hearted parody of television chefs, the Swedish chef wears a huge chef's hat and has big bushy eyebrows that totally cover his eyes.

The Swedish chef can always be seen in his kitchen with flailing arms holding multiple utensils and waving them around. He speaks in gibberish mock Swedish and usually sings his funny little incomprehensible Swedish chef songs.

As the Swedish chef explains what he is doing in his recipe, he peppers his talk with the occasional English word which makes it even funnier, especially as he introduces more and more unorthadox equipment to work in his kitchen such as firearms, tennis racquets etc!

Every dish is an adventure, whether he is being attacked by his own spaghetti, shooting salad pieces, trying to persuade chickens to lay some eggs, and being bitten on the nose by a fish he was trying to cook.

Muppets Movies

The Muppet movies were just as funny as the TV series, except they last longer and will keep your kids quiet :) You will probably find yourself sitting down to watch them together as you remember funny skits from long ago.

Animal Muppet

Crazy Drummers Rule!

Animal MuppetAnimal is a Muppet that we can see in people when they go crazy on the dancefloor or some other place :) The drummer of the Muppet Show band Dr Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, Animal lives up to his name! His primal, fun loving nature makes him definately one of my very favourite Muppets!

Although his vocabulary is limited to grunts and yells, his passion for the drums is larger than life. He lives what he does, just ask him: Beat Drums!! His drum playing is often so violent that he usually appears chained to the drumset. The only one who can come even close controlling Animal is Floyd, who will shout a dog command like sit or stay, to which Animal barely obeys.

His love of drumming and just creating and participating in mayhem in general often gets him into trouble with the Muppet show guests. Especially during musical numbers, where he has been known to erupt in violent musical outbursts, he has been bashed up in various ways by frustrated guests, but it never gets him down :)

The Muppet Show DVDs

Most of the adults today fondly recall The Muppet Show which was a variety show that included celebrities as guest stars. Not only did we see the variety show, but we saw the goings on behind the scenes where Kermit and Scooter tried their best to get the show on without a hitch.

My all time favourite Muppet movie!

Muppets From Space

Amazon Price: $2.98 (as of 06/03/2012)Buy Now

You know you're in for a funny time with a movie starring puppets whose catchphrase is "Space. It's not as deep as you think."

Although it is the sixth feature film from the Muppets, Muppets in Space is my favourite :) Is it because I'm a bit of a space freak? Or just because it's really, really funny? Or a mixture of the two? I don't know and I don't care - I used to watch this movie over and over when I was a kid!

The story begins with Gonzo, who as you should know is one of the most beloved Muppet characters in my heart :) Poor guy is having a bit of a crisis based on his undefinable heritage and the feeling that he is all alone in the world (which is something we can all relate to!). After an alien race starts communicating to him via his cereal, the crazy interstellar adventure begins.

Filled with cute and zany little idiosyncrases and the characteristic Muppet madness, this movie is one of the best!

Rowlf Muppet

Rowlf MuppetWith my love of dogs, it would be impossible for me to not include Rowlf the Dog in my list of Muppet characters :)

Rowlf is a scuffy brown mutt, one of the kinds you find looking out at you from a pet shelter's window who has no recognisable breed or history. His long floppy ears and friendly face was Jim Henson's tribute to great dogs everywhere, I'm sure.

A creative dog, Rowlf plays the piano and is something of a classical music hound. Always calm, friendly and good natured, Rowlf is one of the oldest and most well traveled Muppet as far as television appearances go, first appearing in a commercial for dog food in 1962.

Rowlf's talents go beyond the piano too - he dons medical gear and plays Dr Bob in the recurring medical drama skit "Veterinarians' Hospital with Miss Piggy and Janice as his nurses.

Frank Oz once said that Miss Piggy grew up in Iowa; her dad died when she was young and her mother was mean. She had to enter beauty contests to make money.

Bunsen Muppet

Bunsen MuppetDr Bunsen Honeydew is a Muppet scientist. Bald, with glasses and lab coat, he was named after Robert Bunsen who invented the Bunsen burner.

Bunsen is very serious about his experiments, which always cause injury to his long suffering lab assistant Beaker. His experiments are characteristically zany, including edible paper clips, banana sharpener, and electric nose warmer.

One of Dr Bunsen's cutest features, to me, is that he seems to have no eyes. I'm sure that they're there somewhere, probably just too small to actually see, hence his glasses. He sometimes takes his glasses off and cleans them, no doubt he has trouble seeing!

Muppets Fozzie

Fozzie MuppetEvery children's franchise seems to have a bear, just like every child's playroom seems to have a teddy bear. What is it about fake bears that we love so much? They're fuzzy, cuddly, and in this Muppet's case, funny too!

Fozzie is the Muppet Show's resident comedian. Big and sweet-natured, Fozzie is the Muppet everyone loves to love. Always trying to do his best, Fozzie is so pure of heart that you can always find a smile for him. A true friend to Kermit the Frog, Fozzie attempts to lighten everyone's life with his simple jokes (which never fail to get heckled by Waldorf and Statler).

His jokes are always so bad that you kind of feel sorry for him, he's trying so hard! Even when he's helping out backstage, he still somehow manages to get it wrong, such as when he wrote the script for the show and Kermit could barely read it.
