Supposedly Kermit was made out of a green coat that Henson's mom had thrown away and his eyes were made out of ping pong balls.

There is a myth that Kermit was named after Kermit Scott who was friends with Jim Henson when they were kids. The Jim Henson Company has publicly denied this.

An early version of Kermit appeared in 1955, in a 5-minute puppet show for WRC-TV's "Sam and Friends".

For the first year of The Muppet Show, Miss Piggy, like all the other Muppets, wore the same outfit - a silver lounge dress. It took some convincing, but Frank Oz eventually agreed that having a variety of costumes would add depth to her character.

Miss Piggy started out as just another member of the chorus until someone rubbed her the wrong way and she let him have it! Her potential as a star emerged with that karate chop.

To film the water ballet in "The Great Muppet Caper," Frank Oz had but a week of training with underwater equipment, then spent a week under water while Miss Piggy swam with the girls. He ended up with a bad ear infection.

Contrary to popular belief, Miss Piggy cannot bat her eyes.

The first known appearance of Miss Piggy was on the Herb Alpert TV special Herb Alpert and the TJB, broadcast on October 13, 1974, on ABC. Miss Piggy's voice was noticeably more demure and soft, as her agent got her an audition with Herb singing "I Can't Give You Anything but Love".

Miss Piggy's personality and voice has been seen and heard in other female characters performed by Frank Oz before the character's debut. For instance, a Sesame Street Muppet skit from 1971, Snow White, featured the titular character performed by Frank Oz and acting (as well as sounding) like Miss Piggy. Another sound-alike came from a contestant in a Guy Smiley sketch called "The Mystery Mix-Up Game".

Though it is often believed Fozzie's name is a play on Frank Oz (F.Oz), he was actually named after Faz Fazakas, the person who created the mechanism that allowed Fozzie to wiggle his ears.

Fozzie's mother Emily Bear appeared in A Muppet Family Christmas special.

In the Muppet Movie Fozzie makes reference to his uncle, whose Studebaker he traded in while his uncle was hibernating.

His cousin is an audience member. In one episode of the Muppet Show he begged the other audience members not to insult his cousin Fozzie.

Fozzie was crucial to The Muppet Show because he was conceived as Frank Oz's main character, and the success of the show would depend to a significant degree on Frank having the opportunity to display the full range of his virtuoso performance and comedic skills.

On the first season of Muppets Tonight, Statler and Waldorf are seen watching the show from the living room of what appears to be a retirement home. In the second season, they watch the show on a portable television from various locations, including a golf course and a ski lift.

Statler and Waldorf were named after two New York City hotels -- the Statler Hotel (which was renamed the Hotel Pennsylvania in 1992), and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Waldorf's wife, Astoria, completes the set.

In The Muppet Christmas Carol, they play the ghosts of Scrooge's business partners, Jacob and Robert Marley. In Muppet Treasure Island, Statler and Waldorf are the Figurehead of the Hispaniola. In The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, they appear as the Kalidah Critics, strange beasts who shout insults at anyone attempting to cross a treacherous bridge.

Gonzo, along with his chicken girlfriend Camilla, became a traveling plumber. He met Kermit and Fozzie and joined them in their quest for Hollywood. He started his acting career as a daredevil performance artist, but would later evolve to play dramatic roles, including Charles Dickens.

Gonzo had a prominent part at the start of each Muppet Show episode, playing the final trumpet note of the opening theme. In each episode, something different would happen -- for example, the trumpet would explode, or spray water, or blow up a balloon. In the first season, Gonzo did not use a trumpet, but instead attempted to hit the white space within the "O" in the "Muppet Show" sign like a gong, usually with bad results.

The exact name of Gonzo's species has never been revealed. The character originally evolved from Snarl, a frackle from The Great Santa Claus Switch. However when "The Great Gonzo" appeared on the The Muppet Show the frackle species trait did not carry over.

There is only one member of Animal's family that has ever been spoken of. Animal's mother's name is LaVerne, and also plays the drums. It is figured that playing the drums must be a family trait.

Animal was the mascot for the U.S. snowboarding team in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Animal was happy for this, but did not appreciate the cold.

He joined the group, Electric Mayhem (the Muppet Show band) a few years after starting to play the drums. He is the most well known, and popular member of the group.
