The Best Cheap Functional Swords

Musashi Miyamoto is the name of the legendary samurai after whom the popular Musashi Swords are named. Musashi swords are high quality Japanese Katana swords at budget prices.

Many swords in the low price range (less than $100) are solely display swords. Musashi swords however are functional swords and can be used for cutting or other training purposes. Apart from that they really look awesome.

According to experts: "Musashi swords are rapidly becoming one of the most reliable and high quality providers of budget Japanese swords and blades".

All the swords on this page are battle ready swords. So if you are looking for an affordable good quality Katana sword a Musashi will probably the best sword you can buy.

Why a Musashi Sword?

Relatively High Quality for a Low Price

Cheap, High Quality Katana Swords
Musashi swords are the best entry level cutting swords. The Musashi company offers functional swords which are extremely low priced considering the good quality.

The lowest price range (from $50 to $150) offers affordable swords which are great display swords but can also be used for light cutting work. The higher priced models ( $150 - $300 and above) are even more durable and can easily withstand regular beatings in the backyard or dojo.

Musashi swords are very good swords for cutting and general practice use. They are great for practitioners as well as people who want a very good looking and functional Katana.

The Musashi company is known to offer a wide range of spring tempered mono steel blades. These are ideal for beginners because a spring tempered blade is harder to chip or bend.

Some of the Musashi swords can even be bent 45 degrees and will return to the straight and true form just like the more expensive models.

If you are new to Japanese swords the many terms for the components of the swords like tsuba, kissaki, habaki and saya might be confusing. This Wikipedia list shows an overview of all the terms.

Musashi Katana Swords

Katana = long sword

The Katana is a type of Japanese sword and is often called a "samurai sword." In a precise sense, the term katana in Japanese is applied to any kind of single-edged Japanese sword, although, incorrectly or habitually, some Japanese and Western sword lovers define katana as the standard size moderately curved (as opposed to the older "tachi" style featuring more curvature) Japanese sword with a blade length of greater than 60 cm (23.6 inches)

The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single edged blade, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan, and has become renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability, to the point that its purported cutting capabilities have reached mythical status. Musashi Wakizashi Swords

Wakizashi = short sword

The Wakizashi is a traditional Japanese sword with a shoto blade usually between 30 and 60 cm long.

This Japanese sword is similar to the katana, only shorter. The wakizashi was usually worn together with the katana by the samurai in feudal Japan. The wearing of two swords together is daisho, literally "long and short" translated. "Dai" (long) for the katana and "Sho" (short) for the wakizashi.

The Wakizashi, or the shorter companion blade to the Katana, was about 18 inches long. Only the warrior class - the Samurai - was allowed to wear the two swords, which remained a custom for the next several hundred years until abolished in the 19th century.

The Wakizashi sword was primarily a defense, which the samurai could block the attacks. Trained fighters could use the short sword attacker out of balance during a counter attack and then attacked with the long sword when an opening arose.

Handmade Japanese Shirasaya Samurai Katana

The blade of the sword is constructed from carbon steel and features a visible temper line. The blade is full tang. The saya is wooden with a dark stained finish. The saya has been crafted to contour the shape of the blade. And fits seamlessly into the handle.

Musashi Odachi Swords

Musashi Daito Sword

The term Daito would be used if the Katana was larger then average, such as Musashi Miyamoto's Katana, since he was well above average height, his Daito was over 30 inches in length, while most Katana's of the time were 26-29 inches.

Miyamoto Musashi Sword Fighting Style

Did you know...

Miyamoto Musashi only used two swords when fighting against multiple armed opponents. When fighting only one man he used one sword but quite often he did not even bother to use a sword! He dodged his opponent and tapped him on the head with a stick.

He did encourage students to train dual wielding swords. When using two hands for a sword, there is not fluidity in movement according to Musashi.

"If you hold a sword with both hands, it is difficult to wield it freely to left and right, so my method is to carry the sword in one hand".

Test Cutting (Tameshigiri )

Tameshigiri is test cutting to determine the quality of a sword. Nowadays bamboo and rice mats (Tatami mats) are used for test cutting. In ancient Japanese times however human bodies were the preferred material. The bodies would be either condemned criminals or corpses of deceased.

Miyamoto Musashi dueling Sasaki Kojiro

movie fragment of this famous duel

Opinions on how this legendary fight ended differ. Some say Musashi used a bokken (wooden sword) to distract Kojiro who wielded a Nodachi, and attack him by throwing a Wakisashi or a Kodachi at him.

A documentary on History Channel (as one of the commenters also mentions) shows Kojiro laying on the ground trying to slash Musashi legs in a final attempt. Musashi then quickly jumps out of the way and delivers a lethal blow to Kojiro's chest after which Kojiro coughs some blood and dies.
