1960's Era Muscle Cars

In today's world, we are trying to find ways to conserve energy and are looking for more miles per gallon for our vehicles. But during the sixties, the highway system grew, gasoline was plentiful, and the people wanted power and speed. In many small towns, the youth were seen cruising around town in their muscle cars and hanging out at the local drive-in's. People wanted faster cars. Manufacturers answered consumer pressure, they began by putting big block V-8's on mid-sized chassis. They realized there was a demand from a younger market, wanting great street performance and cars that could be used for racing. Consumers wanted speed and beauty. The 60's muscle cars are a part of the Classic Car Era. The term muscle car generally describes a mid-size car with a large, powerful engine. They had eye appeal, sleek, shiny, smooth and powerful are terms that come to mind when describing their beauty. Muscle cars are high-performance automobiles, that were produced between the early sixties to the early seventies. If you had a muscle car, you had bragging rights. Fierce competition between car manufacturers led to horsepower rising, with some muscle cars offering as much as 450 horsepower. Some factory models were upgraded to be drag racing cars.

The Feel of the Sixties

During the sixties, bell-bottoms, halter tops and platform shoes were popular clothing trends. Long, straight hair, peace signs and lots of beads were proudly worn by the females and males of the era. Head bands, fringe vests, mini-skirts, polyester shirts and Studio 54 pants were also popular.

Kids rushed home from school to watch the Brady Bunch, Bewitched, the Flintstones and Batman. While parents were tuned in to Gunsmoke, Rawhide, The Real McCoys, The Andy Griffith Show, The Smother's Brothers or The Price is Right.

Twiggy was probably the most famous model of the time. Her extremely thin figure graced many, many magazines then.

The Beetles and artists with Motown Records were heard on most all of the radio stations around. In the early sixties, songs like "Stand By Me", "Crazy", "The Wanderer", "Runaround Sue", and "Crying" were very popular. In the late sixties, we had (I Can't Get No) "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones, and "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan, "In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett and many more.

And who could forget "Woodstock".

My First Car

My very first car was a 1968 Camaro and she was a beauty. In 1976, my parents bought it for me right before I got my Learners Permit. I was not to drive it until I had earned my driving license.

My Camaro was in need of a new paint job, so we took on the task of stripping the old paint off of her. It took us quite some time to remove the paint and sand her down. We chose Tapestry Red Sunfire Metalic paint as her new color and carried her to the best body shop we knew of to have my Camaro re-painted. She came out like a gem.

When I passed my driving license test, I was allowed to drive her for the first time. I remember one of my girlfriends was in the car with me the first night I got to drive my Camaro. We met a guy friend, that also had a Camaro, and decided to see which one of our cars were the fastest. We went out to a remote area and the race was on. My friend was a little scared and ended up with both of her feet on the headliner. To this day, I still believe he allowed me to win, it was fun but stupid. First, street racing is illegal and dangerous. Second, moments after we raced, I was pulled over by a nice police officer. I was shaking in the drivers seat. I thought someone had turned us in, but apparently, my tail lights had gone out due to a blown fuse. Needless to say that ended my racing career. Probably would have delayed me ever driving again, too, had my parents ever found out.

I kept that Camaro until I graduated from high school. A friend bought it from me and I believe he still has the car today. I wish I still had her.
