Museum Marketing

Marketing For Museums.

Museums are very popular in the UK and despite overall falling numbers, they have seen an upturn in visitor numbers in recent years.

Many people enjoy going round museums and they are such a great resource for families to get involved in topics, in the past and as a source of education for young people.

Museums have been looking at new an innovative ways to market themselves and relight the interest that they had in days gone by.

In the UK museums are free; which is a fantastic resource for the British public offering an excellent place to learn and discover new and exciting things and view national treasures in comfort. There is however questions during these economic times that maybe they should be making a small charge so as to help cover running costs (which are very high).

Website

Most museums have websites set up; often quite basic however would require constant attention and updating. Many museums would use website designers or internal resources to look after their websites and SEO.

Graphics

Many museums will use graphic designers to produce a range of graphic items from posters and banners for new displays and exhibitions to museum brochures and guide books. Most museums would also use designers for branding work and design of stationery.

PR

Many museums would use PR agencies to help with brand exposure and to handle the mainstream media as and when they come into the spotlight,

Telemarketing

Telemarketing for museums is normally inbound and would normally be handled internally by museum resources.

Advertising

Museums do advertise from time to time and would have advertising agencies in place to help with different campaigns (be them radio, billboard and newspaper/magazine adverts). TV advertising is not really a form of advertising that museums get involved in purely due to the costs associated.

Internet Marketing

Museums do not use PPC advertising to market themselves possibly due to budgets (however if they did make a small charge then they would probably be able to use PPC).

Most museums have a marketing campaign in place (normally with a marketing manager) to cover things like their website activity, PR and general advertising.

Cunning Websites

Websites play a major roll in the world of marketing and museums are no different. Many museums have very engaging and interactive websites (as they are government backed they have the funds to invest into dynamic and expensive websites).

Many museums use the latest in web technology to ensure that the websites are as vibrant and appealing to all kinds of visitors, young people, old people etc.

Many art businesses and museums need dynamic websites in order to attract customers and visitors into attractions and events at the museum.
