Beautiful Music and songs over Christmas
Music to sing, play and listen to over the festive period
Consider the activities over Christmas - exchanging gifts, wrapping gifts, putting up a tree, preparing Christmas dinner, eating a family Christmas Dinner, Family gatherings, Christmas Parties, relaxing by firelight in the evening. When you consider it, all of these activities would be bleak and eerie without a little music.
Indeed, when you think of these activities, they are happy times, fun times, and without having thought of it, you will have imagined music there in the background for it.
Music can be sung, can be played and can be listened to. Some music is appropriate for one occasion - perhaps Carols at a family Christmas singsong or perhaps a Christmas hit pop song at home relaxing.

My Favourite Carol
Silent Night
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Savior, is born!
Christ the Savior, is born!
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
This has always been my favourite to sing. I love it because it is tuneful, can be sung solo or in a small group, and requires you to moderate your voice. It is a calming song, almost a lullaby.
It can also be sung with the backing of small instruments, a band or even a full orchestra. It is indeed a very flexible song. It is of all the Christmas songs, the one that stays most in my mind.
As a child, it made me think of the peace as all the children settle early, as people forget any enmity. As an adult it was the relief of being away from maddening crowds. It still calms me to hear this.

Hope For Henry: Not just For Christmas
Hope for Henry, as I understand it, is about putting a smile, giving moments of joy to Children in these situations. That must be worth a thought at Christmas!

How long has music been a part of celebrations?
A street 100 years ago would have had plenty of Carol singers. A wealthy patron would have a few musicians to play while they enjoy celebrations. Even the poorest would take time for songs and rhyme at Christmas.
In my mind it is an integral part of the joy and getting me in the mood.

Christmas Sing-Songs
My family has a tradition of gathering around a piano every year, and singing Christmas Carols. My mother plays, and we sing either in unison or in harmony.Since there are 5 children, we can get quite a pleasant sound together. For us, singing has always been enjoyable, and although the tradition of Carol singing has declined a little, it is a very uplifting family activity.
Maybe if no piano is available, a guitar can be used. Voices can sing in unison or harmony with no backing at all and sound beautiful. Even if you are not a great singer, practice and it will get easier.
Carol singers in public
London Tube stations often have singers, often taking donations for charity.
Christmas Hymns
Do you make your own Christmas music?
I have talked a lot about singing, playing and generally getting into making your own Christmas music. Do you think making your own Christmas music is enjoyable?

Treasures-By-Brenda says:
I sing a lot, much to my family's chagrin! (I will be the first to admit that I cannot sing.)
As part of the research for my Singing with Elvis lens, I recorded myself singing Blue Christmas with Elvis Presley and it was so sad we were on the floor laughing! If you CAN sing, you should check it out and let me know what you think!

I like make my own music for much of the year, and Christmas is no exception. At Christmas, I do more of it in public and around family or friends though.

Internet Radio
The first to start on is the Christmas Lounge on SomaFM.This is family friendly with hymns, cute instrumentals, songs sung by Disney Characters, classics like Bing Crosby singing White Christmas and lounge/chilled remixes of well known christmas songs.
If you have a more mature crowd, perhaps Xmas in Frisko on SomaFM would be more suitable. This is not suitable for all ages. It is an eclectic and amusing mix - expect to hear more cheeky versions of songs here - for example naughty versions of The 12 days Of Christmas.SomaFM is commercial free, listener supported internet radio.
Christmas Hits
Some of these or original songs written by artists, and some of them are classic Carols covered very well by an artist.

I will start off with my favourites:
- Merry Christmas Everybody
Nothing says Christmas like this Slade track - which was almost discarded and retrieved from the mind of Noddy Holder. Seeing it performed for Top Of The Pops - the classic place where BBC would showcase pop acts - just completes the nostalgia associated with it.
- John Lennon - Happy christmas (War is Over)
This is John Lennon of the Beatles fame.
Another classic I love. It is only having listened to Slade immediately before I realise how similar they are in composition.

- I like to hear some of the favorites set to piano or just instrumental versions. Also like some renditions with an old-timey blues flavor or raggae mix. (Actually, I just like music!) Thanks for sharing so much good stuff in your Christmas music lens.

- Christmas is never the same without the lively carols that we often hear and sing ourselves. They help set the mood and bring the Christmas cheer! Hey, I've just finished my second lens and when you have a moment, I would love to hear what you think. If you have a suggestion- please let me know. I'm learning as I go and so appreciate your help.
