What is Auditory Processing Disorder?
And How Can it Effect a Child's Development?

"In its very broadest sense, APD refers to how the central nervous system (CNS) uses auditory information. However, the CNS is vast and also is responsible for functions such as memory, attention, and language, among others. To avoid confusing APD with other disorders that can affect a person's ability to attend, understand, and remember, it is important to emphasize that APD is an auditory deficit that is not the result of other higher-order cognitive, language, or related disorder.
There are many disorders that can affect a person's ability to understand auditory information. For example, individuals with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may well be poor listeners and have difficulty understanding or remembering verbal information; however, their actual neural processing of auditory input in the CNS is intact. Instead, it is the attention deficit that is impeding their ability to access or use the auditory information that is coming in. Similarly, children with autism may have great difficulty with spoken language comprehension. However, it is the higher-order, global deficit known as autism that is the cause of their difficulties, not a specific auditory dysfunction. Finally, although the terms language processing and auditory processing sometimes are used interchangeably, it is critical to understand that they are not the same thing at all.
For many children and adults with these disorders and others - including mental retardation and sensory integration dysfunction - the listening and comprehension difficulties we often see are due to the higher-order, more global or all-encompassing disorder and not to any specific deficit in the neural processing of auditory stimuli per se. As such, it is not correct to apply the label APD to these individuals, even if many of their behaviors appear very similar to those associated with APD. In some cases, however, APD may co-exist with ADHD or other disorders. In those cases, only careful and accurate diagnosis can assist in disentangling the relative effects of each."

Music Education Can Help
Numerous studies have proven the effect music has on the world around us. Music can soothe the soul, music can motivate, music can make your garden grow bigger and better, and music can teach children with auditory problems what they might not learn otherwise. Sometimes called sound-therapy, music can help stimulate the connections in the auditory cortex, improve clarity of hearing, increase information-processing speeds, improve linguistic comprehension and spontaneous use of greater vocabulary, and it can also improve auditory-visual linkages--just to name a few of the benefits. There are a number of ways you can introduce this therapy to your child. Since it is hard for the child to endure, it is sometimes a good idea to pursue music education through an endeavour that he already enjoys--like the computer. Reading together, or listening to stories on tape, can be beneficial, too.

Some Good Guidelines to Follow
2. Move with the music. Clap, stamp, blink, wave, wiggle or tap. Use any actions you both can do. It will be fun for your child to watch.
3. Play instruments or toys to music. Start and stop with the music at certain intervals. Take turns. Play together.
4. You should be your child's role model. You can't expect your child to sing or move if you won't do it. Be excited.
5. Listen to the music. Choose different styles of music, for instance: Classical, Country, Rock, Vocal, Jazz, Bluegrass, Opera and Instrumental.
6. Exaggerate what you do to encourage imitation. This includes facial expressions, body movements, vocal expression and oral movements.
7. Remember to praise participation at any level. This will encourage your child and gives them a feeling of accomplishment.
8. Do not over stimulate your child with music. Be aware of how much time your child is exposed to music and sounds, including radio and television. Getting too much sensorial stimulation decreases the benefits of music.
9. Get rid of distractions like TV, toys, outside noise and interruptions when doing musical activities with your child. This will dedicate your child's attention on the activities.
10. Have fun! Music is a natural teacher so keep this special time enjoyable for everyone.
