The Cha-Cha, also called the Cha-Cha-Cha, is a genre of ballroom dance, and is included in the American rhythm complement of dances. The original music can be attributed to a single composer, Enrique Jorrin of Cuba, in 1953. He began by modifying the composition of danzones. Danzones are a fusion of European dances brought to Cuba by French colonists fleeing the Haitian Revolution and African rhythm and dance styles.
Cha-Cha is written in 4/4 time. The accent is on the second beat of the bar, with a split fourth beat. The Cha-Cha has a range of 26 to 34 beats per minute, with 30 to 32 being the normally accepted range for social dancing.

Instructor Teresa Mason, assisted by Randolph Scott, teaches basic patterns for six popular ballroom dances: fox-trot, cha-cha, tango, waltz, rumba, and swing. Mason sensibly begins by introducing steps that recur in many ballroom dances, such as walking step, rock step, and triple step; several dance positions; and music timing for different dances.
