The Viennese Waltz is a genre of ballroom dancing, and is part of the American smooth complement of dances. It is the oldest of the partnered dances.

The Viennese Waltz is a rotary dance. Couples turn in clockwise or counterclockwise movements with change steps to alter the direction.

The basic timing of a Viennese Waltz is 3/4. The downbeat is the first beat of the measure. The music follows a crescendo from the first to the third beats, falling in the second half of the third beat. It follows a range of 50 to 62 measures per minute. For social dancing, a range of 50 to 54 measures per minute is best.
