The Waltz is a genre of ballroom dance, and is part of the American smooth complement of dances. Generally slower than the viennese Waltz, the Waltz follows a range of 28 to 36 measures per minute.
The Waltz has a basic timing of 3/4. The downbeat is the first beat of the measure. The music rises in a crescendo from the first to the third beats, diminishing on the second half of the third beat.
In the International Standard Waltz, the couple never leaves the closed position. The American Style Waltz does break contact entirely in some figures, and allows for a good deal of variation.
