Music notation software helps musicians of every standard capture their compositions using computer software. This means that your musical ideas can be captured by a computer as you play and then printed out as sheet music.
The great thing too is that once your music has been saved by the music notation software you can then edit by moving notes, changing keys and so on in the software and save different versions too. The best thing of course is building up tracks by adding different voices or instruments so that you end up with a band or whole orchestra playing your tunes.
Obviously the music notation software can't turn you into a musical genius, but what it does is allow you to play around with musical ideas and then develop them in a very easy way. In the past great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven did all of this in their heads and used paper and ink to record the ideas they had. If you think about this is an incredible skill, particuarly if you are not classically trained. What the music notation software does is make it so much easier for you and I to do what the great composers did naturally.

- Wonderful! You have all my favorites :) Although, I'd like to point out that a lot of DAWs now also have a score editor built in, so if you were already planning to buy something like FL Studio or Pro Tools, you don't need to go out and buy something different as well.

- I use Finale PrintMusic, and it's served me pretty well. I started with their free package (don't remember what it's called), then upgraded to Songwriter, then to PrintMusic as my needs progressed.
I'm adding this lens to my "Making practices CDs" lens where I talk about notation software.

- Hi! This is fabulous! I have been using an old version of Finale PrintMusic for years for compositions and arrangements for my students. It has good and bad qualities. Time for me to update my version though since I know there are many new features now. I've been researching which one to get, but haven't decided which one. This should help me to narrow down a bit. Lensrolling this to my sheet music and reading music lenses for my students and others to check out. Thanks! Peace! :D
