Relieve stress, anxiety with healing music

Relaxing music reduces stress

Music is amazingly effective for relaxation and stress relief. Since ancient times, music has been used for calming the spirit, and it's frequently included in meditation to focus the mind and still busy thoughts.

Years ago, I found Discovery Store CDs promoted as healing tools and decided to try them to relieve anxiety. (I have an inherited anxiety disorder, which can make me nervous even when nothing stressful is happening.) I'm continually amazed at how well this music works to calm me when I'm feeling anxious. Healing music is an invaluable tool to reduce stress and aid relaxation; I consider it a life-saver, and I feel certain it can help you as well.

Music calms your soul

Listening relieves anxiety

Meditation with music offers calming relief from stress.

The right music can soothe agitated thoughts and take you to a place where everything is calm and peaceful. Using it regularly can help reduce stress and make your reaction to stressful situations less extreme. As a counselor once told me, if you're on edge, it takes very little pressure to knock you off balance, but if you can establish a steady baseline state, you can remain calm when confronted with adverse conditions. If you close your eyes and listen to healing music selections a few minutes each day, you'll find yourself more in control and less vulnerable to outside pressures.

Calming songs from sound experts

Not all healing music programs are equal. Some CDs bill themselves as tools for relaxation or meditation, but they have no real basis for that claim. The artists below have made a serious study of music and its effects on the brain and the body. Their compositions were created using knowledge gleaned from years of research and testing.

Even so, music is a personal preference and some artists will appeal to you more than others. It's important to find music that's both effective and enjoyable, because you won't listen regularly if you don't like the music. I got these CDs in boxed "variety" sets of healing music, and there were artists in the sets that simply didn't appeal to me. Those discs are no longer in my collection. I've owned the selections below for more than 10 years and I still find them pleasant to hear and effective at easing my anxiety.

While the CDs work best without distractions, I'll often listen to them during the workday. With the sound volume low, they don't disrupt my productivity but they still provide a calming atmosphere. I find listening through headphones is most effective for relaxation and stress relief; I think the subtler elements of the music are lost when I listen with speakers -- or maybe the headphones just provide a cocooning effect, blocking out other sounds. Whatever the reason, I definitely get better results when I use headphones.

Visualization and relaxation

Picture peaceful images while you listen

Visualization also provides stress relief.

Visualization -- picturing an image or experience in your mind -- has also proven to be very effective for relaxation. One visualization exercise that was suggested to me was to imagine yourself in a boat, gently bobbing in quiet waters. Other peaceful images I've used while listening to healing music include floating on clouds, walking along a forest trail, and resting under a tree. (My new favorite is picturing myself receiving a massage in a beachfront garden; it's amazing how relaxing it is just to imagine this experience!) Try picturing yourself in a safe natural setting the next time you feel anxious; even a few minutes of visualization can reduce your stress level.

My new favorite to relieve anxiety: Theta Meditation

Relaxation photo from iStockPhoto
Recently, I found myself wanting a new disc for my collection. I considered albums by Steven Halpern and Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, and I ended up choosing Thompson's Theta Meditation System largely because it's targeted towards improving the ability to handle stress. The music contains the same layering of sound (including natural sounds like wind or water) that I associate with Dr. Thompson's work, and I particularly enjoy that trait in his music; I find it's very effective at engaging my brain and keeping me focused on the music (as opposed to whatever problem or concern I might have in mind). I was a little puzzled by one brief section of the first track: the layering largely disappears and a simple electronic tune dominates for about two minutes. This section seems a bit out of place, but I can only assume it's there for a reason, and I've more or less gotten used to it -- although if I'm only going to listen to one track, I do pick the second one instead. I have to say, though, both tracks do work! I can definitely feel a physical response when I listen to this music -- sort of a tingling in my feet and sometimes my legs -- and the music always leaves me relaxed.

This disc contains 60 minutes of music divided evenly between two compositions.

Spotlight: Steven Halpern

After I first published this article, several readers were kind enough to suggest Steven Halpern as another artist I should try. I recognized his name and knew I had heard his music, but I thought his work had dropped out of my collection for a reason. Recently, I was having a high anxiety moment and decided to check his selections in Amazon's MP3 store. I chose several titles to preview and was delighted to rediscover Music for Healing. When the first track started, I immediately recognized the song, even though it must be over ten years since I owned this disc. (I suspect I loaned it to the same person who lost my original copy of Wind & Mountain.) I promptly bought it, downloaded it, and started playing it. I think I listened to it three times that day, and I'm very happy to have this title back in my library. Recently, I invested in another Halpern album, Chakra Suite, and bought tracks from several other titles. I'll certainly buy more of Halpern's music in the future.

Here are other albums I use. Wind and Mountain is particularly good for stimulating creativity; I used to listen to it in art class and always found that it helped improve my work.

MP3 players keep healing music handy

You can't rely on always being near a stereo when anxiety strikes -- not when so many stressful situations happen when we're away from home. Having a portable music player is a great way to keep soothing music with you wherever you go. I keep an MP3 player by my bedside and often use it to listen to the titles I've mentioned. Listening to healing music is a great way to quiet your mind and prepare yourself for sleep; I always find I sleep better when I spend half an hour listening to Music for Brainwave Massage before bed. And you don't need an expensive player -- the baseline models have more than enough capacity to hold many albums of healing music.

One suggestion: I strongly recommend buying different headphones for use with these players. The style that comes with the player is one I find very uncomfortable, and you can't relax if your ears hurt! I've listed a couple of alternatives below, including the ones I'm using now. They feel more natural than anything else I've tried, so I'm definitely using this style from now on.

Get healing music now: MP3 downloads

Prefer downloadable MP3 versions? Most of the discs I mentioned are also available in MP3 format so you can have immediate access to healing music. (Please note: only the first track of Harmonic Resonance is available in MP3 format; it's on the album Healing Music Project 3, which includes a selection of other tracks as well.)

Also, don't worry that the MP3 versions (which are typically compressed) won't retain the integrity of the original compositions. I purchased two albums in MP3 format and I've had great results using them, so I feel confident that none of the subtleties of the music were lost.
