Chosing the Perfect Music for Your Practice
As a reiki practitioner and former massage therapist and, I've learned when and why to choose certain styles of music. Read on to find out how your choices can help you craft the perfect session!
Relax While Your Read
Try Timed Music

Many massage and reiki CDs are now created to play exactly one hour. These are perfect when your practice centers around timed sessions. The more you play them, the more you'll get a sense of how much time has passed based on the music that's currently playing. This can help keep you on track and working smoothly within the time limits of the session.

Choose Soothing Music
Always listen to a CD before using it, and try to imagine how it would sound if you were the one on the table. When you are in a relaxed meditative state, like many people reach during a massage or reiki session, the music can have a big impact on your mood. Anything too dark can disturb your client or make them uncomfortable.
So, be careful when choosing a CD, even if it's from a well known artist. Remember to play only music that creates a safe, supportive environment for your clients.
Match Your Music To Your Modality

Taylor your music choices to fit your particular modality. Play Asian inspired music for a traditional reiki session, or upbeat dance music for an on-site sports massage. Soothing Indian music works well for Ayurveda massage, or try aboriginal didgeridoo music if your practice focuses on reaching a deep meditative, dream-like state.
Sing the Praises of Your Favorite Artist

There are so many great artists out there producing music perfect for massage and reiki. Who's your favorite?

- I've been in the health and wellness industry for many years now. I always thought there would be a niche market in actually branding your own type of music to match that of your spa. Great article.

Block out the World
I've used white noise under the music I play to effectively block out the outside world, and to create a little bubble of calm in a busy environment. They are also great for working in a place that asks you not to play music, like a grocery store chair massage practice or an out door event such as a health fair.

Choose Music You Like
Do you enjoy choosing music for your practice? Do you like what you play? Or, is it just one more thing that needs to get done?

Get Back to Nature

You can bring the sounds of the forest, the ripple of a stream, or the majesty of the ocean right into your session room with nature inspired music CDs. These are great for letting the client's mind drift away, or to help them feel like they are being treated to a massage in a pristine natural setting.
Nature CDs work perfectly with a practice based around organic themes such as infused massage oils, aromatherapy, mud masks, sea salt scrubs or herbal wraps.

- Great advice and education. As a Quantum-Touch practitioner and former massage therapist, I tend to not use music in my energy healing sessions, but your information has me thinking again about how important it can be. It was definitely an important factor in my massage sessions.

- Thanks. I'm glad my lens got the ole synapses firing. ;) I don't know much about quantum touch, so I visited the website after reading your comment. It looks like a lovely, powerful, supportive modality.
