Elliott Smith at a glance
Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 - October 21, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and resided for a significant portion of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. His primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. Elliott Smith's death
On the afternoon of his death, Smith reportedly fought with his girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba. Chiba maintains that she locked herself in the bathroom, heard Smith scream, and came out of the bathroom to find him standing with a knife in his chest. She removed the knife, called 911, and performed CPR. The wounds were repaired at LAC-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, but Smith died a short time later.
Although there were some inconsistencies with a suicidal stabbing that left the coroner unable to rule the death a suicide, it seems clear that that is what it was. There was a brief suicide note on a Post-It that read, "I'm so sorry - love, Elliott; God forgive me," and, according to his girlfriend, Smith had a history of self-mutilation and expressions of suicidal intentions. Toxicology reports showed only legally prescribed antidepressant and ADHD medications in normal amounts.
