Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith was a singer, songwriter, and musician. His acoustic guitar and sweet, whispery voice created beautiful songs that often focused on his history of depression, drug addiction, and alcoholism. Although he was best known for the Oscar-nominated song "Miss Misery" from the movie Good Will Hunting, he has had a loyal cult following before and since his limited mainstream success.

Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003, at the age of 34.

Elliott Smith at a glance

Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 - October 21, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter and musician. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and resided for a significant portion of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. His primary instrument was the guitar, but he was also proficient at piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. Smith had a distinctive vocal style characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery" and use of multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures, and harmonies.

Elliott Smith's death

Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003, as a result of two stab wounds to the chest. It is believed that the wounds were self-inflicted, but the official autopsy results were inconclusive.

On the afternoon of his death, Smith reportedly fought with his girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba. Chiba maintains that she locked herself in the bathroom, heard Smith scream, and came out of the bathroom to find him standing with a knife in his chest. She removed the knife, called 911, and performed CPR. The wounds were repaired at LAC-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, but Smith died a short time later.

Although there were some inconsistencies with a suicidal stabbing that left the coroner unable to rule the death a suicide, it seems clear that that is what it was. There was a brief suicide note on a Post-It that read, "I'm so sorry - love, Elliott; God forgive me," and, according to his girlfriend, Smith had a history of self-mutilation and expressions of suicidal intentions. Toxicology reports showed only legally prescribed antidepressant and ADHD medications in normal amounts.

Heatmiser

Before his solo work, Elliott Smith was a member of the rock band Heatmiser.

Heatmiser was an alternative rock band that originated in Portland, Oregon in October 1991. Consisting of Elliott Smith (guitar and vocals), Neil Gust (guitar and vocals), Brandt Peterson (bass; later to be replaced by Sam Coomes, frontman of Quasi), and Tony Lash (drums), they were known for their well-crafted lyrics and songs often featuring the juxtaposition of melancholic and cheery words and melodies. The pop-oriented songs of Elliott Smith were a contrast to the darker songs of Gust, while both Smith and Gust's songs touched on subjects such as anger, alienation, loneliness and d...
