I played trumpet when I was a kid and had a ton of fun in band. Music was very inspiring to me. Great Lens.

This is an excellent page for homeschoolers! We used "Music and Moments With the Masters" by Cornerstone. This included cassettes featuring a biography and music. We enjoyed listening to the music and learning about each musician. I am thankful my husband plays several instruments and was able to take their music education to the next level.
  • jimmyworldstar Feb 5, 2012 @ 1:56 pm | delete
I think a great resource would teach the various instruments and also teach the different notes and pitches.
  • quester Jan 29, 2012 @ 7:19 am | delete
good educational information - great over views - children should learn from the classic (first, IMHO) then moving forward - good job

Interesting article. I'm new to squidoo, so I'm not sure how it actually works. I did enjoy your article though.

I am using your lens as one of music 'reference' for my friend's website. I hope you don't mind...once it's done, I will send you the website address. I really like your educational lenses. This one is awesome.

  • seosrija Sep 26, 2011 @ 1:42 am | delete
Great lens about classical music. We are going to forget our originality of classical. We should appreciate all the new one like pop, rock but don;t forget that we got all of them through classical base.
  • tuliprose Sep 23, 2011 @ 2:04 pm | delete
Encouraging children to play music in groups and to play music games is so important for developing their social skills. Really enjoyed your lens.
  • Wayne_Jordan Sep 21, 2011 @ 9:10 am | delete
This i s an excellent lens on teaching music appreciation. Of course, also learning to play an instrument helps enormously. We home schooled our older son, and enrolled him in piano lessons as well. He'd learn a simple tune like Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on the piano, and found himself playing along to the orchestral version. His understanding and appreciation were greatly enhanced by combining the two activities.

Jimmie, wonderful lens on teaching classical music. I agree that its a powerful thing to introduce children to, can lift and build their souls in a way that empty mtv pop can't match. Now I have a question for you, you can only choose one: Debussy or Chopin?
  • computer_repair Aug 27, 2011 @ 8:09 pm | delete
They had featured J.Bach on one of Dr. Houses' Episodes.
  • dotsonr Aug 22, 2011 @ 3:12 pm | delete
Great stuff! I think it's really important for kids to learn about the history of music. There's so much more to it than top 40.

I love classical music! My son is a pianist. He plays classical music, but also jazz and modern music. I learned how to play the piano too, but I didn't continue studying. In any case, music helped me very much, and this is why I wanted to give to my son the same opportunity to learn an instrument. He also plays the guitar, and flute. Talented musicians play all instruments? I'm glad I found your lens!

This is sure to be helpful to anyone looking to teach classical music to kids. As a musician myself, I would advise parents to check out Leonard Bernstein's lectures. They're brilliant.

Great idea and great lense. I'm sure this info. will be helpful to parents. I don't have children and found it searching for music lenses for the Herman the Merman quest. I did enjoy listening to the bach number. I think you should put more YouTube modules for examples of the other types of music you list.

I love the way that this lens flows. It was as flawless as the music video that was provided for it! I believe that every child should be exposed to classical music. This is the foundation of the many music art forms that truly express every facet of deep human emotion.

As a lover of classical music, I like your choices throughout. Good basic grounding. Using Bernstein right up front was perfect. He was great at teaching youngsters.

Great article. Lots of good information here. I like to listen to classical music when I get stressed.
  • GospelSmith Oct 2, 2010 @ 9:23 am | delete
Thanks for the overview of classical music. My Dad played french horn -- played under Toscanini and Fiedler among others -- and taught me something simple about classical music when I was a child: listen for a theme that jumps from one instrument to another, from high pitch to low pitch, from one rhythm to another, and so on. Listening for the many ways a composer uses one simple melody line has helped me appreciate classical music.

Besides being a violinist, composer, and music producer, I also teach violin (on the college level). I can't speak with more enthusiasm for and support of what you are doing with homeschoolers. May I suggest that you add Pachelbel to your list of Baroque composers? There is a YouTube video on my site, which you are welcome to add here, that uses my interpretation of Pachelbel's Canon in D. Bravo on a superb lens! Love and Blessings, Daniel
