Introduction

Video 1 - Explaining Plexos

Squidoo now has Plexo

Plexo is a new feature on Squidoo that lets anyone vote on links, books and yes, videos. Sort of like Digg or Reddit, but with the Long Tail thrown in.

Generally speaking Plexos can be used for a combined range of purposes including:
  • Promotional/Informational - Get the message out, generate traffic, share ideas etc.
  • Revenue Generating/Fund Raising - Make money for yourself and others, donate to charities.
  • Web Content/Plexo List Mashups - Enhance and add value to webpages or create new resources by combining Plexos.
  • Data Collection/Collaborative Data Banks - use crowdsourcing techniques and user recommendations to build dynamic lists.
  • Viral Distribution/Social Networking - deliver data through Widgetized connectivity and Web Feed Syndication (RSS) designed for easy implementation and distribution of media in a viral manner.

How the "Mega Music Plexos List" Works

If you have a music related site, or a Squidoo lens with at least one music related Plexo on it, there are a number of ways you can use the Mega Music Plexo to help you. If you haven't created a music related Plexo list yet just grab someone elses. That's partly what the MMP list is for and creating Plexo mashups is key to making The Long Tail work for the benefit of the whole community.

To start I'll explain how the effective dimensions and benefits of the MMP list extend in many directions.
  • The Plexo list harnesses the wisdom of crowds and is a relatively quick way of building a data bank and index where items can be ranked to promote popular resources. Adding a lens to the list means free promotion and greater visibility for the lensmaster while helping people to locate and discover music related content. Plexo moderation, collaborative ranking and filtering help to make the list more relevant for users.
  • The list can be reproduced in a potentially limitless amount of locations and on many electronic devices via the special Plexo widget code or the RSS feed. The list can appear on other lenses, blogs, webpages and in technologies capable of distributing RSS feeds.
  • It is designed to help people find cool music resources AND other music related Plexos. These Plexo lists may be quite different from the primary lens topic. This is useful for locating a variety of music lists that can be reused to create new lenses out of Plexo Mashups. This lens is an example of a Plexo Mashup.
  • The best way to promote your own music sites, lenses and Plexos is to add links to the MMP list below and place the list on your own lens or site. Although it's not a requirement to get on the list, doing so will increase the "Mega" effect and amplify potential results. The list is moderated to eliminate spam and abusive content.
  • Together, thousands of people are building Plexos right now! The Mega Music Plexos List is just one of the thousands of Plexos driving traffic to and around Squidoo. In this context Mega stands for amplifying and multiplying the original signal message a million-fold. Squidoo is a collaborative community where lens neighbours live side by side helping and learning from one another. Sharing Plexos helps build community connectivity and promotes traffic flow between lenses.
  • With the introduction of Plexos, Squidoo has also become a Widget Platform allowing us to distribute data into the Widgetsphere, connecting lensmasters with other networks in the wider Internet community. Spreading Plexos on social networks like MySpace and del.icio.us obviously benefits everyone. Using the tag "plexos" when bookmarking and blogging will help people find and discover interesting lists.

This lens is great. I have not written a lot about music, but I have plenty to write about when I get there. I will almost certainly be looking at this lens and its links for inspiration.
