Guiding ships from Lake Muskegon to Lake Michigan

There is a narrow strip of water that connects Lake Muskegon to Lake Michigan. This area is protected by two concrete walls stretching into the water. In 1851 the first lighthouse was constructed to help guide ships through this narrow passageway. Two later lights were built in 1903 (South pier light) and 1871 (South breakwater light).

The lighthouses in Muskegon, Michigan are great ones to photograph. There are actually three different lights that you can see from the shore: the South Pier light, the South Breakwater Light and the North Breakwater Light. There is good access for photographers both from the park on Beach Street and from the pier in the Coast Guard station.

It was great to be able to photograph the lights from several different angles. I hope you enjoy this pictorial tour of the Muskegon lights.

Muskegon South Pier Lighthouse

Photographed from Beach Street Park

This is a shot of the Lighthouse through the trees. We visited in October when the leaves were just starting to change colors.

Lighthouse through the Branches

Muskegon Lighthouse looking through the tree

I thought this would be an unusual shot of the lighthouse. I lined up the lighthouse through a fork in the tree.

All three lights are visible in this long view of the lights. You have to look real close to see the small green and white light in the center of the photo.

I love this shot of the lighthouse reflected in the water. I use it for a design on one of my journals entitled Reflections.

Never thought of an inland light house, but then Michigan is big enough to be a sea, so of course they would have them.
