Saltys Mustache Wax
Ranked #3,679 in Fashion & Beauty, #55,072 overall
Saltys Stockholm Tar Mustache Wax,
Beeswax is the main ingredient, unbleached organic is better for the soul, and adds a natural bit of gold shading to silver hairs.
in this batch of wax, I'm going with the vegetable oil/gum arabic method of taming beeswax, the theory being the wax will be somewhat water soluble, a trait Salty desires in his stache wax.
Genuine Stockholm tar is the main fragrance added to this blend, it also adds a hint of extra tack. Salty thinks it adds just a bit to its sea worthiness, giving one a bit of that Old Tar scent.
I like that recipe, it works easily and holds good, but it is more suited to being squished from a tube than from being in a screwtop tin,
in the tin, it evaporates too quickly, and doesn't always rehydrate to the original consistency unless heated.
So, time to experiment with other techniques
Dec. 1/ 2010 - experimenting with a beeswax/coconut oil mix for the cold wet weather
Dec. 14/ 2010 - so far the various B/C mixes have been failures
Feb 2/2011 - experimenting with beeswax/petrolatum blends,
trying to come up with something good, better, best.
haven't yet...
May 2011 - I've been using a beeswax, petroleum jelly blend for the last few months, now the weather is changing, and the winter blend doesn't work so well in the hot weather,
think I'll be moving back to the gum arabic recipe for the summer
sept 2011 - still using a beewsax/petrolatum blend, seems to work fairly well until the days go over 100F.
feb2012- beeswax/petroleum jelly mix is still working fine, about 50/50 by weight
finding the right formula
Let the Trials Begin :)formula #1 was a recipe I found online, basically a reverse engineered clubman clone, I don't care that much for the basic formula, its easy to clean up, but it has no holding power after a coupla hours. I think I can doctor it up tho.
moving on !
ah, Formula #2 is very close to what I'm looking for.
I made enough to send out a few sample tins and have had very good reviews thus far.
Mar-12-10
3 week trial run update, had to add a few drops of water to the tin, stirred it up with a toothpick.
easy to see why clubman comes in a tube, don't have to deal with evaporation.
the drops of water mixed in very easy. probably could have just misted the wax and put the lid back on.
However, I wanted to see how the mix was fairing at the bottom of the tin, so out came a toothpick. a heavy duty toothpick...
During mixing, I didn't notice any separation of the ingredients, no granulating, as the first batch did.
I rather wondered after cooking the tin (in my vest pocket, laying on the dash) during that hot saturday day at the flea a few weeks ago, the wax at the edges of the tin had melted, I didn't stir it then, just as an experiment.
the wax has gotten darker with time, oxidation of stockholm tar is my first thought.
This formula has medium dark brown color that results from the natural beeswax & stockholm tar. seems like there isn't as much silver in the gold of my stache.
Arrrrr Matey, mayhaps it be the Fountain of Youth !
LOL ;)
Winter laziness wins out and right now I'm just using a basic beeswax/petrolatum blend, heat up the tin to melt the wax,
brush it in, it lasts a few hours
parts and pieces
