My Adopted Princess

Ranked #8,781 in Pets & Animals, #223,680 overall

Meet Princess!

I'm guessing she's 4 or 5 years old. She's a sweetheart and a half!

I don't know what breed she is, but she is soft as a bunny! In the morning, she wakes me up by licking my hand...so sweet!

She's had a bit of a rough go, but she's great now and very well loved.

About me

Cats have always been part of my life
and always will be.
I love all animals, but to me, cats are special.
They are very smart and
can take care of themselves.
If you are mean to a cat, it will leave you.
You must earn a cat's love.

Most of my cats have found me.
(I think there's a sign up somewhere)

Where did I get her?

From my step-mother

In August 2010, my step-mother died just two months after my father passed. I hadn't seen them in over 10 years and was not close to either one of them, but took the 5-hour trip to their house to help my brother and sister go through things.

From the moment we met, Princess was a sweetheart. I've had enough cats to know a good one. When I asked my brother what he was planning to do with her, he told me he'd have to take her to the pound because he couldn't take her.
NO you won't! She's going home with me! (One of my cats had just died the week before, so I had a cat vacancy)

JoAnn, my step-mother, adored Princess as evidenced by the license plate picture. Princess was an only cat, which may be why she's so good with people. Unfortunately, she's not good with other cats! JoAnn never let her go outside because a neighborhood cat would always attack her!
I felt bad for Princess not getting to go out because cats love it outdoors so much. I also knew it would be hard for her to adjust to a new house with other cats in it...and it was!
More about that later...

How did I come up with the name?

I didn't!

She was already named when I got her. I would never name a cat Princess! It's just embarrassing! Especially when I go out to call her! But, Princess she is, so...

Sometimes I call her"Plunger-butt" because from the back it looks like somebody stuck a plunger on her butt... plus, it keeps her humble.

Dogs have owners, Cats have a staff!

What are my favorite things to do with Princess?

Feed her and pet her

When I pull the cat food bag out of the cupboard and open it, I let her poke her face inside the bag. Without fail, she licks her lips as if to say "yum, yum" and her eyes light up. It cracks me up!

(I've been trying to get a picture of her doing this, but it's so fast that I haven't gotten it yet. I'll keep trying.)

Princess is just a pleasure to pet because, as I mentioned before, she's soft as a bunny!

Other fun things I do with Princess

How embarrassing for a cat to be seen with a mouse on her head!
That's one of the great things about babies and animals...
you can make them look ridiculous and they couldn't care less cuz they don't get it!

Princess's favorite toys

She truly amazed me one day when all her toys had disappeared. I looked and looked, but couldn't find them anywhere... The next morning, all the toys were back in the toy box where I keep them. She knew exactly where they were and how to put them away!
I've never had a cat do that!

The 5-hour Trip Home

Poor little girl! I put two towels in the bottom of her Cat Carrier and with my brothers help, got her strapped into the backseat of the car. I'd have put her up front, but the carrier was too big. We didn't get a mile down the street before she had an accident...she was so scared! I pulled over and took the top towel out of the carrier and threw it away. Got on the freeway and turned on some music hoping she would calm down and stop crying. It didn't work. (to this day, she runs when I sing!) OK, so off went the music and I just talked to her. That didn't work either...
Have you ever spent 5 hours in a car with an unhappy cat?
Half way home I pulled off to get something to eat and discovered she had thrown up
---out went the second towel. (Thank goodness I put 2 in there!) After 5 hours of constant meowing, we finally got home. I'm not sure who the trip was harder on, me or her.

Adjusting to a New Life

I knew she'd be afraid of the other cats, so I put her in my bedroom upstairs where I could close her in safely. I had her all set up with her own cat box, food bowl, and water dish in the attached bathroom. I'd go upstairs three times a day to feed her, clean the box, and spend some time with her. After a few days, I invited her to come out, but she had no intention of moving out of that room!
It took her 2 months to come out of the bedroom and play with me on the top landing of the stairs. It took a full six months for her to come downstairs! As soon as she spotted another cat, she'd scram back to the bedroom.
Eventually, she got braver. I think boredom got the better of her. There was another month or so of hissing, growling, and running back to her safe zone.
Today, though, she is the "alpha" cat. She runs this place and don't you forget it! What a transformation! What a Princess!

I'll never forget the first time she went out in the backyard! What a thrill! (She was never allowed to go out before.) The yard is completely fenced in, so she's safe back there. Now it's the first thing she wants to do every morning! She LOVES it outside! Just in the last 3 months, she's figured out how to get over the fence, around the side of the house, and up to the front door. She meows when she's ready to come in and I open the door, obediently.

Smart Cat!
She knows just how to get me to do what she wants me to do!

What kind of Cat do you have?

It always amazes me how the dynamics of the group change when a new member joins...
It takes awhile for everybody to figure out who the new boss is!

I enjoyed meeting your adopted friend through this lens! She looks so much like the cat I used to have, only half of his nose was black, and he had a patch of "bobcat spots" on his stomach.
