A Blessing on your lens

Have you just received a cryptic comment in your guestbook about an angel blessing?

That's because I've seen your work and recognise the merit in it. It's a way of letting you know that your efforts have been worthwhile and of encouraging you to continue creating lenses of this calibre.

My angel blessing is to tell you that you're on the way to being a top quality lensmaster!

Once I've given you a blessing I keep an eye on what you're up to - I have a look at your new lenses and generally follow your progress through the world of squidoo.

What is an angel blessing?

There are a lot of lenses about Squid Angels. In this one I will just say, very quickly, that an angel blessing is an appreciation of your work.

When you receive a blessing, it's a little Thumbs-Up for you. Your lensrank will rise. But it won't stay there! An angel blessing will wear off in time and you have to do the work yourself to keep your lens high in the tiers. Update your lens, add some more content, see what tags are working best and keep your lens refreshed.

My interest as an angel is to find newer lensmasters. I believe our more recent members who turn out a high class lens are the ones who deserve encouragement. This doesn't necessarily mean that i will bypass a member who's been here longer! It just means that I actively search out fresh lensmasters who show promise.

Every angel has a different set of ideas of what lens deserves a blessing, and I have my own. You can read my standards for a blessing in What I look for in a lens a little further down this page.

What I look for in a lens

All angels are different and we all have our own standards for a lens blessing. These ones are mine - and not the views of the angels as a group.

Bio No lens is complete without your bio and an image to represent you. If you have a default bio it looks like you just don't care. Remember, you can change your bio at any time - even have a different one on each lens.

Default Modules : Same thing. Name your modules. Remember, module titles function as tags!

Intro : The introduction is the most important part of your lens. In this opening you have the chance to catch the reader's attention, do this by having an interesting image to illustrate your content and make your content count. Use your keywords here, but don't go over the top, we don't want it reading like a list of metatags, use your own good sense. Please, don't ask for stumbles, ratings, diggs etc here - they should be at the end of your lens when people have read your content and are in a position to judge.

Content Modules : Squidoo considers lenses with fewer than three content modules to be unimproved and I do too. I don't count long extracts from wikipedia as content either. Use one if you wish, but I much prefer to see your own content, rewrite it in your own words.

Pictures : Squidoo likes pictures. Vary your modules and use the Text with BIG picture as well as the regular text module. Experiment.

Amazon Modules : There are a number of amazon modules but, whichever you choose, write something yourself about the item. It makes your lens more personal and the item more attractive.

Affiliate Links : If you have your own affilliate links, don't throw them at the reader in the introduction. Spread them throughout your lens - once again, use your own good sense.

Spelling and Grammar : Check your grammar and spelling. If English is not your first language please mention it in your bio or somewhere. No one is going to get dinged just because they are learning to write in English but native English speakers who haven't checked their spelling will miss out on a blessing for sure. If you're uncertain as to how to spell a word, then try typing it into google, you'll almost always get the question "did you mean ...."

Engage your readers : Get them to interact through a poll, a duel, a plexo. Don't overload your lens with too many, once again use your own good sense and look at your lens through the eyes of a visitor.

Links : Are your links working? Test them to make sure.

Originality, Your Own Voice and Flair : What makes your lens different from all of the other lenses on the same topic? Why should anyone read it? If you're writing on a topic that's very popular you had better make it different and not cut from the exact same cloth as the other hundred thousand competing for our attention. Give it your own style, your own interpretation, your own pitch. Give it your own voice. If you like something - tell us why.

Do you have passion?

Angels are an important part of squidoo. Our job is more to keep an eye out for spammy entries than for anything else.

Along the way, as I look out for the dreaded spam, I come across a lens which is extra deserving. A lens made with no errors, no default modules, no hyperbole. A lens that shines out because it's made with passion.

Do you have a lens made with passion?

Have you proof-read it? Did you remember to edit the guestbook? A good way to see how your lens stacks up is to post in the Lensmaster Lounge : Critique Me Forums for some helpful feedback from your fellow squidooers.

When you're satisfied that your lens is at its best, you may be ready for a blessing.

What's your opinion?

Should a blessing be public?

Indeed, yes! I want to know when I've been blessed

BarbRad says:

I love seeing those blessings. It's an affirmation and an encouragement to keep working even harder, as well as a nice surprise.

DeboraR says:

A blessing should be public. I believe since its something earned and deserved then it should be shared with others to see.

Not at all! A blessing should be secret

cjsysreform says:

My personal preference is not to be directly informed when a lens of mine has been blessed. I like what you've done with this lens though, because anyone who does want to know if the winged Susanna-creature has blessed them can come check here anytime... but it's their responsibility to find out, rather than your obligation to tell them.

Leave a note for me

If you have a lens you would like to be reviewed by the angels pop over to the Angels Forum.

You can ask for a blessing here if you like, but be aware that, if your lens is poor quality, it may just get a ding down. (It has to be very, very bad for a ding and I can't really believe your lens would be so appalling)

Leave your link in the guestbook and I'll get back just as fast as I can.

If you have to ask if you're plagiarising, you most probably are. Apart from intentional thieves, fraudsters and cold blooded scammers who know perfectly well what they are doing, there are some people who have literally no idea that plagiarism i... view lens

10% of my income goes to continue the work of Fred Hollows in treating avoidable blindness and improving indigenous health.

Blindness is a significant public health issue in Cambodia. Over 160,000 people are blind and an additional 20,000 become blind each year. The main cause of blindness is cataract, which can be treated by a simple 15 minute operation at an average cost of $25 (AUD$35).
