My Apron, A Story From My Childhood

My Apron is a simple picture book recommended for children four to eight years old but enjoyed by children much younger than that. It is about a young boy, his uncle and his work of plastering. In a very simple text and a style slightly different than the usual Eric Carle style, an eight-year old boy is thrilled to help his Uncle plaster a chimney and, eventually, to receive his own apron for the job.

This page offers you a brief discussion of Eric Carle's book (a true story), some links to more reviews and a great children's apron so that your child can feel the same sense of pride that the young boy in this story does when he is helping you in the kitchen or with a craft or building project.

Children will understand how Eric enjoys being able to help an adult and learn that an apron is a useful item rather than a identifier of gender.

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEWS:

I always recommend using the Amazon customer reviews to learn more about an item. In this case, I enjoyed reading user reviews of this book. One anonymous customer says that her 2 ½ year old son loves this book. Jennifer Juday explained a bit more when she said that her son picked up on the uncle's comment that the boy is a good helper. Children love to hear that they are good helpers and helping in the adult world is an important part of this story.

"Inspired in part by French Cubist Fernand Léger's paintings of labourers, the illustrations are vigorous and fresh, a visual paean to honest hard work."

Eric Carle's Comments About My Apron

"My Apron" is a true story that happened when I was 8 years old. I had a couple of days off from school and visited my aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Adam. They had no children of their own and were happy to have me around. My aunt was as gentle and talkative as my uncle was gruff and tight-lipped. But when he did speak, his booming voice could be heard for miles! Yet underneath his roughness was a kind man. I had visited my relatives often before, but this was the first time that I noticed my uncle's apron. And right away I took a fancy to this big white apron with a pocket. I still remember how proud I was of my very own apron and how important I felt to help my uncle with his work."

Sincerely,
Eric Carle

Why do you think children like aprons?

My son loooooves to be a "helper." I'll look for this book at the library. It seems different that other Eric Carle books and is one that I would not have been interested in otherwise. I predict that my son will get his own apron soon. Thanks for the overview.

p.s. I would like to go to the Eric Carle museum too.

why didn't i think of that? I made my kids some aprons for Christmas and was thinking "there's got to be a better way than having to tie them up all the time..." and there is!
