My Apron, A Story From My Childhood, Was Published In 1994

My Apron is a simple picture book recommended for children four to eight years old but enjoyed by children much younger than that. It is about a young boy, his uncle and his work of plastering. In a very simple text and a style slightly different than the usual Eric Carle style, an eight-year old boy is thrilled to help his Uncle plaster a chimney and, eventually, to receive his own apron for the job.

This page offers you a brief discussion of Eric Carle's book (a true story), some links to more reviews and a great children's apron so that your child can feel the same sense of pride that the young boy in this story does when he is helping you in the kitchen or with a craft or building project.

"Children will easily identify with Eric's pleasure at being allowed to help out in the adult world, and the story concentrates on the garment as a useful piece of clothing rather than as a gender marker."

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEWS:

"My 2 1/2 year old son loves this book. He walks around the house with it saying, "Mommy, this is 'My Apron,' I love this book!" That speaks volumes to his mommy!

"One comment that his uncle makes that we hear is that the boy is "a good helper," and we see the boy repeat that comment to himself as he continues to work with his uncle. Our toddler picked up on that comment immediately. It is something that children love to hear, and I think he identifies with the boy in the story and the magic of getting to help at real work. At two, our boy is very interested in the work we grown-ups do, and loves to help. This book fits right in with that."

"Inspired in part by French Cubist Fernand Léger's paintings of laborers (as a note printed on the endpaper tells us), the illustrations are vigorous and fresh, a visual paean to honest hard work."

Eric Carle's Comments About My Apron

"My Apron" is a true story that happened when I was 8 years old. I had a couple of days off from school and visited my aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Adam. They had no children of their own and were happy to have me around. My aunt was as gentle and talkative as my uncle was gruff and tight-lipped. But when he did speak, his booming voice could be heard for miles! Yet underneath his roughness was a kind man. I had visited my relatives often before, but this was the first time that I noticed my uncle's apron. And right away I took a fancy to this big white apron with a pocket. I still remember how proud I was of my very own apron and how important I felt to help my uncle with his work."

Sincerely,
Eric Carle
