My Bagpiper

I Have a Bagpiper

Not everyone is lucky enough to have their own bagpiper, but be careful for what you wish for because bagpipe bands teach for free. All you have to do is find your local band and show up!
You might think this is a good thing, until your own budding bagpiper brings home a chanter and begins to practice. Never forget, bagpipes are defined as an, "Instrument of War," and were once banned by the Loyalist government during the Highland uprising in the 1700s. The skirling of the pipes call the troops to battle and can be heard up to 10 miles above the sounds of battle, so you might want to aim your piper toward a nice field or loch or rooftop.
"Requests? Can you play far, far away?"
Speaking of rooftops, my bagpiper used to practice his pipes at work, on the roof. He'd chortle silently to himself when people would say, "I could swear I heard bagpipes today but I couldn't find them anywhere!"

Bagpiping and Highland Games

Eventually, your bagpiper will want to prove himself as Grand Poobah of bagpipers. You bagpiper will compete in Highland Games where there are awards and medals and trophies. Sure, you might have gone to one or two games before, but now you're getting up at the crack of dawn because solo competition starts at 9am--and that's if the games are in your town. Some of them are on the other side of the state. Yes, when you compete with the band, you sign up for ALL the games that year.

From January to April, in my state, every weekend is spoken for and practice is twice a week. But don't stay home and miss out on the fun. Your bagpiper needs your support and there's a lot to see. There's sheaf tossing, caber tossing, and sheepdogs herding. Not to mention all the bagpipes music you can tolerate in one day.

*A good trick is to have a cd of bagpipe tunes in the car. On the way home, make sure it's barely audible and then see how long before someone says, "Man, I STILL keep hearing pipes!"

Do You Knit?

Perhaps your bagpiper will come to your forlornly and beg you to knit him some of those fancy kilt hose-with lots of cables and popcorn tops. And if you do it, he'll tell his friends. Pretty soon you'll be needing these kilt hose knitting business cards!

Have You Heard The Joke About...

You have NO idea how many bagpiper jokes there are. If you go to a ceilidh, you might hear a few. A ceilidh is a party. Everyone gets up and performs a little whether it be a story or a song or a joke and there's plenty of drinking so those stories and songs and jokes get more amusing as the night progresses.

Is 'Taps' a Bagpipe song? It is sad enough to be. If not, then I know of no other.

Got me stumped, but I love the bagpipes. I tried to have my own bagpiper too, but couldn't talk my son (who played several other woodwind instruments) into taking up the pipes!

Bagpiper's Camp

This summer is bagpiper's camp. My bagpiper and my drummer (oh yes, I'm quite deaf now) are both going to the mountains to study and learn from some of the best teachers in the U.S. and Canada.
Mothers--let your children pick up the pipes or the drums. There are college scholarships and then they'll take their very loud instrument off to college with them!

Remember, all you have to do to be a part of the world of bagpipes is show up at a bagpipe club or encourage a family member to go and learn. Maybe one day, you too can have your own bagpiper!

Off Kilter

If you've been to Epcot, you'll recognize, "Off Kilter." Bagpipes aren't just 100-year-old songs anymore.

Modern Bagpipes

Bagpipes have moved forward. Disney has my friend, Jamie, who plays in, "Off Kilter," in Canada. He was one of my bagpiper's early teachers, back in the day. Have a listen at the new sounds.

Love Love Love this lens!I love bagpipes more than words can say! In fact, learning to play them myself has always been on my list of "must-do" things! My love, who lives in Australia and has Scottish heritage (Clan MacLaren) knows this. He's always sending me any bagpipe music he thinks I may not have heard.

I love this lens. I love bagpipes but are they supposed to make you cry when you hear them. Somehow they seem to reach my soul. Oboes do that too. Angel blessed.
