Meet Sarah, my Chinese Pug!

I found my best friend, Queen Sarah Rala, a female Chinese Pug, for sale through a newspaper advertisement in January 2000. After making the phone call and getting directions, I went to the house where she lived. The family had three small sons who ran the little pug ragged. They dragged her around on a leash, in the house, wherever they went. They also had a male pug, but didn't drag him around. She was puffing and panting, and looking at me pleadingly. Basically, she was a loving little dog, but she was exhausted. These little dogs, because of their short snout, have problems getting enough air. I couldn't wait to get her out of there. I wrote them a check and took her home.
Update: Sarah is now almost 13 years old, and is diabetic. Her diet is strictly regulated and she receives insulin shots twice a day.; She is in no pain, and seems to feel much better since the diagnosis. I'm hoping to keep her as long as possible, and as long as she is not suffering.

What's a good name for a Chinese Pug?

Just showing her Queen Sarah Rala was the name she was given by her breeder, reflecting her parentage. We did not want to call her Queenie and the family I got her from said they had called her Sarah. We continued the name because she was already almost a year old, and we felt the transition would be easier on her. She would be learning a new environment and way of life, she shouldn't have to learn a new name too.

Once we had her in our home, she only woke up to eat and go out to potty, for two whole days. But she wasn't so exhausted that she didn't know where her rightful place was in my bedroom...of course, right on the foot of my bed! She jumped up, promptly made her spot and began to snore. It took me a while to get used to the sound, but now after almost 11 years of hearing it, I can hardly sleep without it and her warm little presence at my feet.

She soon fell into my routine, learned not to get tied up in my oxygen line, and would stay right with me no matter where I went in the house. Going to the bathroom alone was a thing of the past! After a time, I noticed she had this habit of laying on my 50-foot oxygen line that runs from my concentrator to me. As soon as I would get up to move, she immediately felt the tug and was up with me like a shot. "Aha!" she seemed to be saying, "you're not getting away from me, I know a good thing when I fall into it."

But she does have her fickle moments, when visitors come, she pays concentrated attention to winning them over, and totally ignores me until she's satisfied that they know she's lovable, and the center of attention. Then she'll return and lay at my feet once more. Sarah is such a little character, and brings so much laughter to my days.

My pug has me trained pretty well...

Waiting for play...I throw a toy, Sarah runs and gets it, brings it back. This works a couple times, until she's had enough, then she just lays down and chews the toy, letting you know she's quitting. She has little "hidey-holes" in corners of the house that she will go to sometimes, and then I can't find her. She will pretend (or maybe not!) that she can't hear me calling her, but if I have food in my hand, she magically appears. She's a little clown!

For giving medication, try these Greenies Pill Pockets.

Greenies Pill Pockets make giving your dog's medications a lot easier on both of you. Sarah actually looks forward to getting her thyroid pill each morning and evening, because she likes the flavor. Giving your dog medications should not be a battle, and using Greenies Pill Pockets, it isn't.

Greenies Pill Pockets are soft and pliable, and can be molded around the pill with your fingers. I find I can cut a pill pocket in half and use it for Sarah's two daily doses of Thyroxin.

How Can I Count the Ways...I love my Pug

What I love most about Sarah is her sweetness and patience, even when you're doing something for her she doesn't like, she is sweet and puts up with whatever it is...like baths, and filing nails, cleaning ears, etc.

She knows she's photogenic and poses like a star.

Pug pfacts:

Chinese Pugs are Royalty

Chinese Pugs originated in ancient China, and there are many photographs and sketches of pugs sitting in the lap of Chinese Emperors and Empresses. They were considered part of royalty...and to this day, the pugs still know it's true!

Chinese Pugs do not like the water...many people think you can throw a dog into a body of water and they will automatically know how to swim...not so with Pugs! Their compact little bodies begin to sink immediately and they have no idea how to save themselves. Many pug rescue organizations will not place a pug in a home with a swimming pool. Be safe and fence your pool to keep children and pets out when you are not with them.

They are not outside dogs, because they are highly affected by hot and cold weather. They have a difficult time breathing when they are too hot, and subject to wheezing when they are too cold.

Pugs love to play so there are toys everywhere....

Sarah loves soft, plush squeaky toys and gets all excited when I bring one home for her. She dances around at my feet until I give it to her. It will only be a couple of days until she has stopped the squeaker by biting through it, but then she loves the toy and will clean it like she's cleaning a puppy. She has a basket full of toys that most of the time are scattered around as though there were children living in my house, and in a way, she is just that.

I feel everyone should know as much as possible about their dog's breed, so that they know the best way to raise and train them. Also, some dogs are prone to have ailments such as hip dysplasia, ear infections, bladder stones, etc. If you are aware of the possibility of these, you can possibly keep your dog healthier longer with preventive care.

Pug Rescue Sites

If you'd like to buy a pug, why not try a rescued pug?

There are pugs who have been rescued, who need a good home. If you're looking for a little pug to adopt, try some of these sites .Some of these little guys have been left without a home due to the foreclosure of their homes or the death of a caretaker. Whatever you do, do NOT buy a puppy from a pet shop in a shopping mall. You have no way of knowing this puppy's parentage, or whether genetic defects and diseases are lurking in that sweet little dog. Buy from a reputable breeder who allows you to see where the dogs live and the conditions in which they are kept. If possible, see the parents. This may help you avoid heartbreak and financial hardship in the long run.

Great lens. Nice shiny coat on her. I wish my pugs had that same shine! Took me a while to get used to the snoring as well. And they were in another room. Pugalicious!

My son has been wanting a pug! He thinks they're the cutest dogs ever, and your photos certainly prove it. We've got an older big dog now, so I don't think a pug's in our very near future, but maybe in a year or two...

Sarah is so sweet and cute! What lucky ladies you two are to have each other! Pugs are terrific dogs, and it is great when you can get one out of a bad situation and into a place where they are happy and can get their beauty rest!

Hi, Nancy. I'm back to say "Thanks, Pal!" and to post this Thanks Giving message on my favorite of your lenses. Choosing one lens wasn't easy as I like so much of your work. But, choosing you to thank was a piece of cake! You have been so supportive, coaxing me to write more on Squidoo. (I will! I promise!) For now -- Thanks, Pal!

I'm so happy you rescued Sarah from the family placing the ad. The day she met you was her lucky day. Little did you both know how much your lives would change. We have a rescue dog and love her to pieces. We also have toys scattered all over the house and our kids are long grown. Enjoyed reading about your fur baby, Sarah. Give her a hug and a big Aloha from Hawaii. :)
