My Best Squidoo Experiences

Ranked #5,927 in Squidoo Community, #387,944 overall

...or why I like Squidoo

I wanted to publish details of my ups and downs with Squidoo. I guess a lot of this will be familiar to old-time lensmasters, but hopefully it will give newcomers some idea of what it's like to be a lensmaster.

I'll add to this as I go along, so if you want to know where I am now, read from the bottom up.

#1 - My First Lens

I came to Squidoo from the CafePress forum. I design t-shirts and accessories for Audio Cloth.

Once on Squidoo, I created an account and create my first lens: Audio Cloth Clothing.

I don't think it's a very good lens. It's most definitely a shop window/showcase. Quite a selfish lens really since it doesn't provide anything back. However I've left it in as it's been one of my highest traffic lenses for a while, possibly because it's the oldest.

#2 - First traffic

I can separate this into two parts:
First traffic to my Squidoo lenses.
First traffic to my other sites

It's always a good feeling when you've got some useful tags that are bringing people in.

I originally started on Squidoo to promote my clothing line. Since I've been on Squidoo, I've changed my mind and want to contribute more here. I still link to my other sites, but only where I can provide extended information elsewhere.

#3 - First income

Yay. Woooh. And all that :-)

I made $0.08 after my first month through the Adsense sharing on Squidoo. I know it's a pittance but I always view these things as being the first trickle through the dam. It was a good day.

#4 - First 5* Rating

This was a long time coming. Partly because I was writing the wrong type of lenses for being popular on Squidoo, partly because I don't do enough networking.

So I sat down and thought what knowledge do I have that others could benefit from. A few lenses came out of that and I've listed them in the following featured lenses section.

I have more in the pipeline. Let's see if I can get to 50 lenses.

These are the first lenses from #4

I learned a few things as I mentioned in #4. These are the first four lenses that came from me thinking what knowledge I had to give. I already write on a few blogs/websites, so I wanted to write different articles to what I write there.

#5 - My 20th Lens

I've just created my 20th lens. While I thought that getting to 50 lenses would be my next good feeling about Squidoo, actually getting to 20 lenses has given me more motivation to continue.

On the way to 50 now.

This is a great idea! I enjoyed your story! Keep going!

Your SquidAngel blessing from Spirituality means that she found that lens to be exemplary - you will receive a temporary boost in lensrank when one of your lenses receives SquidAngel blessing.
Search Squidoo Angels. Many angels have their own lenses and explain how that works. Congratulations!

#6 - Blessed by a Squidoo Angel

Hey, I got blessed by a Squidoo Angel today. Had no idea what that meant. It sounds kinda good and kinda creepy at the same time.

In fact, it's completely a good thing.

So thank you to that Squidoo Angel - spirituality for being the first Squidoo Angel to bless one of my lenses. Well, the first one I know of any way :-)

The lens was followed on from what I learnt from #4 above.

#7 - First email from a reader

One of my lenses prompted a reader to contact me and make some positive suggestions.

Not only did Joan4 leave a note on this lens' guestbook, she also took the time to contact me separately. That's fantastic.

thank you

#8 - First suggestion from a reader

Today I had my first suggestion from a reader. It came in the email as part of #7. I want to separate it out, since the email could just have said "well done", etc.

Instead, there was some useful advice in there, specifically about using the Featured Lens module. So I've now replaced some of the modules over to Featured Lens. It's made me realise I could do with a different image per lens :-)

#9 - Found out how to create my own group

This may seem a daft one, but it took me ages to figure out how to create groups. I had almost reached the conclusion that it was for only Giant Squids and then I saw it; a beautiful Create Your Own Group button.

And so with the recent set of lenses I'd made about guitar amplifiers, I made a group to put them all in. And that group is: Amplifiers

#10 - Finding that I have some fans

Never noticed before, but I'd logged in today and noticed that I have 6 fans. Yay!

Thanks to those 6 members for joining my fan club. Not sure how the fan club concept works over here at Squidoo, but it's got to be a good thing that others think what I write is worth reading.

#11 - Unpublished lenses

To be honest, this wasn't a great point in my experience of Squidoo. I'd written some great lenses (in my opinion anyway) and over time, a few of them became unpublished as people stopped visiting.

Now turning this on its head, I realised that people weren't visiting because the content wasn't fresh. Yes, the lenses were still valid, but there was nothing different about the content from when I created the lenses. So no changes for search engines or Squidoo's own algorithms to work on.

I've seen suggestions about just changing one word in a lens to ensure that you can publish it again. I was never comfortable with that idea.

Instead, I review every lens that becomes unpublished and update the content; sometimes adding more, sometimes pruning content. One of the activities I like to do is to see if there are any new modules that I've been given access to. Some of these lenses were published early on and could benefit from newer, more attractive modules.

I started on Squidoo in an effort to promote Audio Cloth Clothing, but since I've been here, I've stopped doing that.

Instead I've been having more...
