What's on my Reading List for 2012? What's on yours?

I love to read, whether it's a printed, bound book or on my iPad doesn't matter.

And I am particular about what I read, meaning that I usually read books that I've researched, that have been recommended to me, or are on a topic I am really interested in. I am rarely disappointed in or fail to finish a book.

My word for this year is "action" so undoubtedly some of my reading will be on that topic.

On this page, I will keep track of the books I read in 2012 by category. So, jump to your favorite category from the list below or look at the whole list. Happy reading!

What I've Read

Into the Wild

By Jon Krakauer

My first book of 2012 was recommended by my daughter, who is going on her own five month adventure this year, part of it into the wild. I read it in two or three days on her Kindle and it is a fascinating and tragic story.

The author, Jon Krakauer, had his own adventure while climbing Mount Everest, which he wrote about in his book, Into Thin Air. In this book, he tracks the path of 24 year old Chris McCandless, who died in Alaska, after apparently eating something poisonous. Krakauer explores how this Emory University grad decided to chuck it all and live a nomadic and challenging life on the road and in the wild.

The $100 Startup

Chris Guillebeau is one of my favorite online writers. He has built an online business while visiting every country in the world.

In this book, he tells how he did it and presents dozens of other examples of people who have built businesses on very little money. His previous book, The Art of Non-Conformity, is a personal favorite too.

Stop Stealing Dreams

A Manifesto on Education by Seth Godin

This is a must read and it's free! Seth Godin is one inspiring author and thinker. His thoughts on education may make you angry, or inspire you, or both. No matter what, he will get you thinking about what school is for.

One of my favorite lines from the book reminded me of my son.

"Give me a motivated block builder with a jumbled box of Legos over a memorizing drone any day."

This I Know

Notes on Unraveling the Heart

Susannah Conway is a photographer, writer, and teacher who continually inspires me. She started photographing and writing a blog to help her through an intense period of grief. Her writing touched many others and led to her very popular online course called Unraveling.

Now, she tells her story of unraveling in this heartfelt memoir, which includes reflections and exercises at the end of every chapter to get the reader involved in the process.

I wrote a review of the book on my blog, which you can read here.
