Meet Snorlax!

What can I say about my cat Snorlax? He is my fluffy boy, a delightful companion, overindulged (some say spoiled), doted upon and loved excessively. Since my daughters moved out to go to college, he is the recipient of all my pent-up mother love, and he returns the love many times over.

How Snorlax Came into Our Family

Snorlax when he was a kittenWe live in a rural area populated by coyotes, foxes, and even the occasional mountain lion and bear. People's cats disappear on a regular basis. Soon after we moved up here, we lost our cat Rosie, who went out one night and never returned. We got a kitten named Xena that we had for a few years, but she also disappeared without a trace. I was grief-stricken, and when my daughter said her friend's cat had a litter of kittens needing homes, I jumped at the chance to have another ball of fur.

How Snorlax got his Name

Snorlax on a fenceMy daughter's friend had already named the kittens before we adopted him, and all of the names were quite unusual. Snorlax was named after a Pokemon character. I was unfamiliar with Pokemon and I didn't really care for the name. I intended to rename him when we got him home, but Snorlax had sort of become stuck. And as it turned out, the name is pretty fitting. You can read about the "real" Snorlax and see certain similarities.

Keeping Snorlax Safe

Snorlax on a tree limbAfter losing two cats, I was determined to keep the new kitty safe from predators. I know just having him as an indoor cat would be safest, but he desperately wanted to go outside where there are so many interesting things to do, such as watching birds and chasing insects. I didn't let him out at all until he was full-grown, and then only for short excursions with a chaperone. When I did start letting him go out on his own, I made sure he was in the house by sundown. He knows he isn't allowed out after dark, so he likes to play little games with me when I go out to find him in the evening. Sometimes he hides, and other times he lets me come up almost within grabbing range, then darts off and sits there waiting for me to try again. Eventually the fun of the chase wears off and he gives himself up willingly to be carted back to the house.

Why do I Love Cats so Much?

Thoughtful SnorlaxThroughout my life I have had many cats, and all were a great source of comfort and joy. I feel deeply peaceful when I have a purring cat on my lap. Playing with a kitten with a piece of string or a laser pointer never fails to bring a smile to my face. I have also cried into their warm fur when I felt sad or alone.

Cats are beautiful and mysterious. Cats are graceful and elegant. Cats look like owls, which are also wise and enigmatic nocturnal animals. Cats were considered to be sacred by many cultures through history. Read about Cats and World Mythology

Cats also have healing powers. The frequency of vibration of a cat's purr is medically therapeutic. It is beneficial for broken bones, muscles, joints, tendons, wound healing and shortness of breath. Cat owners also have a lower risk of heart attacks and other heart diseases. Read more about the healing powers of cats

Is My Cat Snorlax Making me Crazy?

My family thinks I'm eccentric. Well, they usually use a different word, beginning with a C. I'm good with that. In fact, I must admit there is actually a lot of evidence for this assessment. Maybe my brain is infected with the cat parasite that supposedly causes behavioral changes. I have always been an extreme cat lover, so they can't really blame it on Snorlax. If I am possessed by cat parasites, it likely happened decades ago.

I love Snorlax, what a beauty. I don't believe in the crazy parasite story making us a cat lover. No doubt parasites do horrible things, but nothing to do with being a cat lady. I embrace my cat lady self (much to my kids dismay). Thanks for sharing about Snorlax.
