My Rescue Cat Speckles - A Love Story

An Unexpected Cat

On one blazing hot August summer night in 2006 in Plano, Texas, a cat wandered outside next to the large patio of my apartment and let out disturbing, mournful cries. At first he would not let us pick him him up, but after a minute of petting he did. I brought him out of the 105 degree heat into my cool apartment. I was hoping to just keep him overnight until we found the owner. I was worried about him as it was so hot and I lived in a mixed residential high traffic area.

I'd never met an exotic short hair with their pushed in noses and huge eyes. I found out later he weighed eighteen pounds. We opened a can of tuna fish and he promptly lapped it all up and he chose to sleep in the other bathroom that night.

Trying to Find the Owner

We had two old dogs die of old age in the years before we encountered the cat. We'd been through a lot with them so we weren't ready for any new pet commitments--and besides, we favored dogs. I didn't dislike cats, but I sort of mistrusted them. We diligently searched for the owner, posting online, at pet stores, putting up fliers. He wasn't chipped so that was also a dead-end. He was fixed and had no front claws and because he was a pure-breed and pleasingly plump, it was obvious he'd been well treated.

Well, we never did find the owner and a few days after he burst into our lives, he was dubbed Speckles. Most of the time he's known as Specs.

Although it doesn't always come across in his photos, he has the sweetest disposition and never hisses or bites anyone. He'll let you pick him up as much as you want and scratch his back. It only took about a week before Specs moved inside our hearts.

Pimping our Pets on Ehow

Here's an example of Specs pimped for Independence Day.For awhile, I was a freelance writer for Ehow and used to be very busy in their once fun and zany forums. Specs along with about a dozen other pets was one of the favorite photo subject to 'pimp', which was basically to enhance a photo with drawing or special effects. I have dozens of pictures and great memories and the Ehow peeps became quite fond of him I miss the forums and all the zany drawings and pictures. The Ehow forum is long gone, but he spirit of pimping pictures still lives on.

I'm biased but I think Specs is really photogenic and I have him on quite a few cards at Greeting Card Universe.

My Best Pet Ever

Specs has turned out to be my best pet ever and I've had lots of pets through the years. He's so loyal, gentle and continuously entertaining. He's so smart he's almost psychic.

The vet has estimated his age as between ten and twelve years so I'm hoping I have him for many more years. I've definitely gone from someone with reservations about cats to a cat lover. And one of these days, I'll probably have one of the exotic short hairs as a kitten. I'll just need to invest in one of those companies that make adhesive lint rollers. This breed sure does shed. :}

    Yes, we are all here together on Squidoo! I always wondered about your cat, having seen it so many times pimped in such a variety of get-ups. Thanks for this good cat story.

    What a great lens. I love the "feline Navidad" greeting card. I will see if I can remember how to "lensroll" this into my lens on my magic-carpet cat, Daffodil!

    Thanks for all the nice comments, folks. @Diane, I'd love some of those pics. I guess we need to create a lens on pimping pictures. We've got tons of material! I'm glad we all got together on Squidoo too.
