My Twelve Christmas Joys

Even When All Else Seems Down...

I keep my Christmas joys. The idea of a Christmas without celebration is a bleak one for me. This year I have great reasons for an all out celebration, thankful for family, both blood and chosen, good friends, a wonderful roof over my head, food, warmth, and work - even if I have no paying job.

And let's not forget the cat and dogs. Pets. I have not had such pleasure in many, many, years...

And have never forgotten the pleasures of Christmases past. Let me share them with you...

Merry Christmas, 2011!

A Poem: At Christmas

I hope all of you have had a wonderful holdiay season, and will have a joyous New Year!

One: Childhood Memories...

They begin The Magic...

When it came time to give up all my childhood books, I kept two pages: one, the cover of my favorite Halloween coloring book, and this, my favorite Christmas poem and scene.

Two: It's About Family...

Both Blood and Chosen Family is the most important thing about the season...

If I could show you a picture of my whole family, both blood and chosen, we'd have to take the picture in a football field! The last time we tried anything like a picture of my family, we were in a baseball field, at that! Here is my sister Dot and her husband Frank surrounded by their grandchildren, Christmas 2010. My parents had four children, eleven grandchildren, and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren now come to...twenty-five? I need a roll count!

I acted as the family historian, following in my father's chosen role. My niece Renee is following in my footsteps. Just my father's side of the family can be traced back to the late 1500's. My mother's father came to this country from Ireland in 1868, and his parents, my great-grandparents, were children during the Great Potato Famine. We are spread from here to California. But we have cousins and cousins of cousins throughout Great Britain and Ireland, from Moravia, Germany, and even France. Christmas time is when we seem to reach out and touch all our generations, through the traditions of the season. Even when we feel we are alone, we're not. The living of hundreds of people in our past made us, and have created millions of our kin along the way.

Chosen family, deep friendships, and time with the ones we love the most - if something keeps you from having time with them now, find the time to be in touch, or be with them, when you can. Christmas comes back just with a hug and hello...

Three: The Ornaments and Decorations

The Magic in a Fragile Thing...

It's the first bit of magic I remember, and it's the magic I will go back to as long as I live: the way a Christmas tree looks when its limbs are laden with the delicate artistry of German glass ornaments. With the holidays approaching, let's take a closer look - ah, but you're already right there, looking at your own reflection, and your own memories, aren't you?

Four: The Tree...

What Hangs Upon My Tree

The photo collage of the little girl looking up at all sorts of Christmas trees shows what a lifelong passion I've had for Chrsitmas trees, and German glass ornaments. The collage shows the first tree I remember, and the last living tree we had in our core family, a year before my mother died. Good memories of all the trees in between remain in the fragile glass as ornaments such as these...

Five: My Favorite Christmas Movie

It's A Wonderful Life

I was fortunate to get a chance to meet Frank Capra during a talk he gave at my alma mater some years ago. By that time, age was catching up with his memories, but it was terrific to hear him talk about the making of this wonderful film, those memories were still bright and clear for him, as well as for all those who love this classic...

The Most Beautiful Carol Duet I Ever Heard

O Holy Night

When I was growing up, the Christmas album Caroling Caroling by Tennesee Ernie Ford was my favorite album. But my actual favorite recording of his rich voice singing Christmas carols is a rare one from his television series: A duet with Gordon MacRae. I've heard many versions of this carol, but none, for me, compares to this...
