Are You Connected To Someone Famous In Your Social Network

Ranked #1,143 in Relationships & Family, #143,272 overall

The idea of the Human Web says we are only six connection steps from everyone else on the planet!

Is there anyone famous in your social network? Are you connected to a famous celebrity? Do you know anyone famous? Do you have a claim to fame? If you love name dropping then this is the place for you!

I'm not talking about friends and followers on social networking sites, I am talking about real world social connections. The people here are famous people and their connection to me. How many famous people are you connected to? Just think, how often have you used the phrase 'I know someone who knows....[fill in the name of famous person here]. Its amazing just how small the world is and just how close we all are to fame and celebrity.

For me it started when I was very young, my mother was a music teacher in the town of Carlisle. in the UK. She knew British TV presenter Derek Batey who gained national fame as the originator and host of TV show Mr and Mrs. Now that's all well and good, but my real claim to fame here is based on a family legend that my mother helped Derek rehearse his ventriloquist act before he started on TV. Read on and you'll find other famous people and things I'm connected to.

The idea behind this sort of connection is known as Six Degrees of Separation. The idea was originated by Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy. So I guess spookily by writing this lens I'm sort of connected to him, although it probably doesn't count because I have no social connection to him. Or do I? As an aside one of his claims to fame is that he wrote two novels that were follow ups to Gullivers Travels. and I've done a lens about Gullivers travels! Karinthy's work was popularised by the John Guare film Six Degrees of Separation

"And I don't like books which are full of name dropping."

I met George Michael Before He Was Famous

george-michael

The reason I met him was because his sister Yioda shared a flat on Magdala Road in Nottingham with a good friend of mine from Germany. They were having a fancy dress party based on the colours of UK candy called Smarties. Their other flat mate was a guy in the in the RAF. George was there just days before the release of Wham's first single.

Brian May Made A Guitar For A Friend Of Mine

that's Dr Brian May CBE to you and I

brian-may

One sure fire way to become an expert name dropper is to have a friend in the entertainment industry. My friend is a keen guitar collector and he got to know Brian when he used one of his songs in a computer game he was publishing. Brian built a replica of his own guitar and gave it to him as a gift, along with a sixpence piece (his plectrum)

I Worked With The Dad Of Chris Morris of Paper Lace

Chris Morris was a founder member of the group. His dad worked at slot machine manufacturer Bell-Fruit where I once worked.Paper Lace. known to Americans as one hit wonders, were ridiculed by the Lord Mayor of Chicago when they asked for his endorsement of a song they had released. The lyrics referred to the 'east side of Chicago' in their song The Night Chicago Died and he pointed out there was no 'east side' to Chicago as such just Lake Michigan! Ouch.

I Know Someone Who Knows Peter Gabriel

peter=gabriel

Peter Gabriel enjoys soccer. That's how my friend got to know him. Peter Gabriel's creative interests span and and wide and he has been involved in the development of a neat instant messaging application called Gabble

He is particularly active with the musical event Womad and humanitarian work through The Elders

I've Played Golf With Bruce Forsyth

bruce=forsyth

To be fair I'm sure many people have, because UK TV star Brucie is an avid golf fan and in the 1980s he was a regular guest on the corporate golf day circuit along with fellow entertainer Jimmy Tarbuck. I have vivid memories of being at Beeston Fields Golf Club in Nottingham UK in the refreshment tent on the 9th hole when Bruce stormed into the tent to tell everyone to be quiet because he was about to putt out!

I Filled The Glitter Band Car With Petrol

that was a gas

the-glitter-band

When I was at school I had a part-time job at a gas station in Nottingham. It was in the city centre and so close to the main theatre. I met the The Glitter band who were the support band to the now notorious sex offender Gary Glitter. They pulled onto the forecourt in a massive yellow Ford Granada. They re-formed in 2009 and are now back on the road, I wonder if they still have the same car?

My Son Really Did Meet Kevin Bacon and Tony Curtis

profanity alert

My son was in the audience of the UK TV Graham Norton show when he was asked to take part in a spoof of Footloose. He appears 8 mins 10 seconds into this youtube. where he has to pretend to be Kevin Bacon. Tony Curtis said he did a 'great job'! There is some blue language early in the clip so skip to avoid.

The spooky thing is that there is a book titled the Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon. Of course Carl Jung would say that's just Synchronicity

I Met The 1961 Sound of Music's Mother Abbess Constance Shacklock

constance-shacklock the-sound-of-music

I met Constance Shacklock because my mother was in the Nottingham Operatic Society. Starring in London's Palace Theatre premier of The Sound of Music in 1961, Constance was the Mother Abbess. It was through her influence that Nottingham Operatic Society (an amateur group) were given permission to perform the show on the Theatre Royal in Nottingham in 1970. My mother played the part of one of the nuns. Constance was once a member of the society too, and always attended as a guest of honour every last performance night.

I've Met Donna Shirley

former project manager of the Mars Pathfinder project

donna-shirley

I was on a business trip from the UK to Orlando Florida and was at a popular science talk in the EPCOT centre. Being keen on astronomy since I was a kid I had followed the Mars Pathfinder project with great interest. Donna had been talking and I simply went up and introduced myself as a fan. She was completely taken aback by the guy with an English accent saying 'how do you do, nice to meet you!'

Buzz Aldrin was there as well so that was a real bonus.

She was convicted of 10 murder with her husband Fred West (dec) in 1995.

How Close To Fame Are You?

  • OhMe Jun 12, 2011 @ 9:10 pm | delete
I am not too close to fame at all but sure enjoyed reading about yours. I did ride in a car with Rich Little one time but not many remember him.
  • ChrisDay Jun 12, 2011 @ 2:24 pm | delete
Most of the famous people I know are to do with my professional work, so I never divulge. Interesting lens, thanks.

I was working the phones once on a pledge drive for a public radio station, and I took a phone pledge from Jackson Browne.

My father once appeared on the Dinah Shore Show.

Wow you have a lot more "almost famous" connections than I have. My first wife used to be friends with Cat Stevens sister, just before he became famous. My Grandfather was shipwrecked in the Pacific in a sailing ship. I have met Davy Jones of The Monkees. My Dad used to service the organ for Harry Corbett (Soooty's Dad). Lensrolled to and Featured on My Claim To Fame lens, and Blessed by an angel.

Darth Vader (Dave Prowse) came to my son's wedding, Didn't get a chance to chat with him though, he and his wife disappeared before the reception.

This is going back a bit, I once met George Murphy from 'George and Mildred."

I have a few, but my favourite is that I once got to meet Geoffrey from Rainbow when he was in panto. OK, so only the Brits will know him, and he's probably one of the least-famous, famous people on the planet but hey-ho.
  • reasonablerobinson Oct 30, 2010 @ 5:25 am | delete
That's awesome - he's a megastar along with Bungle and Zippy!
