How to Draw - Drawing Tool Kit
Ranked #9,454 in Arts & Design, #170,577 overall
Always on the road...
I am always on the road as a missionary. I had to come up with a travel kit of drawing supplies, not only for practicing, but also to keep producing drawings. This lens will show you the supplies I use to create all the drawings you see on my website and many of my lenses here on Squidoo.
I am a missionary and an artist. I was born in East Texas, but left at age 19. Eventually, I settled in Tennessee. Over the years, I have raised two children who now live in Tennessee. Missionary training began at RBTC in Oklahoma in September 2005, with graduation from the missions group after two years in May 2007. Then, after returning to my hometown, Clarksville, TN, I began preparations to head out to Northern China, which took place in May 2008.
Drawing is a new skill which started in Spring 2009. During a time of recuperating from an illness for several months, I found ample time to spend in prayer. Out of that prayer time, I began to draw and write cards for various people, in which, I was led to spend time in prayer. Before I was finished with these cards there were a little over 60 of them. They were very rough sketches, but none-the-less, what I was led to do. Through this process, I realized what He was doing, and I continued to draw and develop this skill, and still continue to grow and develop. These drawings are the result. As I travel through China for my primary purpose of ministry, I draw, creating a visual journal of what I see.
I really enjoy the drawing and the purposes for which God has placed this gift in my life. A whole new door has opened, and I am walking through that door, eagerly awaiting to see where the road beyond it leads.
In mid-May of 2009 I moved into Southern China. I love the people and the ministry work here. I still travel around China and work where needed in association with another ministry here, also. This year, to help share the people I meet with my friends and supporters back home I am working on The 110 Faces of China Drawing Project. I have six of these finished, and working hard to get more finished as time permits. I also have started a blog with regular updates about the people, myself, and the drawings. You can check out this and my blog," What is it like to be a Missionary Today", in the links on this Squidoo lens. I also have a Fine Arts America website (linked to this lens) where prints and cards of my drawings and photos are made available to everyone.
Thank you for your prayers and support!
Blessings,
joy neasley

My drawing "tool kit"...
I use a regular, plastic, see-through, children's school pencil box to keep my supplies. Not only is it inexpensive, but it is very durable. I do draw from home, but to produce a consistent flow of drawings, I draw on the road as I travel. This is what my box looks like. It keeps everything dry and protected. paper
I carry a drawing pad with me based on the size of the work I am presently drawing. My favorite paper is Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300. For my Drawing Tool Kit, I cut my Bristol paper into 4' by 3" cards, and them wrap them in a piece of tracing paper to keep them clean. These are so that I can jot down idea sketches, or practice daily techniques of drawing, etc. I tried carrying a sketchbook for this, but sometimes the terrain of the area I am traveling is rough, and the less weight in my bag the better. My favorite drawing paper:
pencils, pencils, pencils
I use four types of pencils:
1. Kimberly Graphite pencils- a wide assortment of them
2. General's Charcoal pencils - hard, med., soft
3. General's Carbon Pencil
4. Two mechanical pencils- 1 .07 size and 1 .05 size with 2B graphite lead
Below are pictures of these in the next module.

Erasers
My favorite erasers are the kneaded eraser, the typing eraser (which can be sharpened to a point), and my click eraser. These three seem to be the most useful for me. Check out Joy's online Galleries:
- Chinajoy's Fine Art's
- Online Galleries of Joy's drawings categorized by subject. Originals and Prints are available.
- Chinajoy's Fine Arts America Site
- Joy's portfolio site includes both her drawings and photography from around the world. Originals, prints, cards, etc available for purchase here.
Blending/Shading
I use mostly stumps, tortillions, and chamois for blending and shading my drawings. The most used would be the medium sized stumps. They are easy to clean by scraping on sandpaper, sharpening, or in a pinch just rubbing on the sidewalk :-) . "How to Draw" Lenses by Joy
The most important item to include:
My IPOD is probably the most important item in the Drawing Tool Kit. There is very little privacy on the road. When I get to a place I can stop and draw, I take out my IPOD, my paper, and my Drawing Tool Kit. When I get started drawing I turn on the music to keep me from getting distracted. When my headphones are in and the IPOD on, I am in my OFFICE working. "In my office" music list:
I listen to Praise and Worship music from my church back home, Riverside Church (www.rschurch.com). When I am not listening to them, then I tend to go for Chris Tomlin the most.

- Great advice. I need a drawing tool kit. I tend to draw, from photographs, when I get home, which is less fun than actually drawing while out and about.

- What drawing I have done in the past has been very impromptu... generally done with a lead pencil, so you know how crude my drawings are. I must say that while the smudge of a lead pencil can be too much, it can also add a little 'uncontrolled' shading as well.

- Very fun lens, I'm not much of a drawer but this seems like a fun hobby. I also enjoy your playlist you added there. Chris Tomlin is also one of my favorites.
