Ranked #4,278 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #158,372 overall | Donates to Acumen Fund

So... you've got your Kindle... Now what?

Did you know there is over a million ebooks on Amazon? (and that number is growing fast, faster than any printer, publisher, editor or anybody in the traditional book business will admit / enjoy), With such of a great catalogue, what would you choose to read? Well, I asked my question myself so I came up with this list. Hope you find it useful!

This Christmas I gave myself something special, a brand new Kindle touch 3G! Which just arrived a few weeks ago, and, to be honest it is truly amazing, so amazing that made my write a lens about it!

I would like to share with you the ebooks I am reading and my little story, hope you enjoy and who knows, maybe if you are still deciding about getting one this could be the lens that gives you the little extra, make up your mind and run to get yours.

Why I bought my Kindle?

Here is my story

Seth's books!

A few months ago I attended a conference about one of Seth's main ideas: Being remarkable! Which took place here in my hometown: Mexico City. I was so impressed with his ideas and the way he expressed them that I started to look up for his books.

The good news: I found 4 translated into Spanish in the libraries around town (1 per library!)

The not so good news: The most recent title was "Linchpin"

The bad news: they were really expensive (I paid about $100 for all 4)

The terrible news: the libraries did not care at all to find more titles for me, even though I am a regular customer and I was willing to pay the price they would ask for!

The only answer was to go right away to the problem solver company. Yes, you guessed right: Amazon.

Kindle tip!

How to get rid of the ads on your Kindle!

undefinedNot everybody likes ads.
In fact, almost nobody likes ads.

I do not have a problem with them (maybe because I am in the business) but that does not mean everybody has to suffer them. Maybe you bought your Kindle with the ads feature to make it cheaper (I did) but, in case the whole ad thing is making your reading miserable I would like to share with you this great tip on how to erase the ads feature of your Kindle that I found on the web.

Make sure you give thanks to Blake Ellison at geek.com for this nice tip.

First of all, protect your brand new Kindle!

I got a nice leather green case for my Kindle, but if you take a look on Amazon there is lots of sleeves, cases and accesories to choose from.

Let's get some free books!

When you receive your Kindle it comes with a pair of ebooks for free, not great titles if you ask me, but you can go to Amazon to check the best 100 titles they offer for free, I am sure that you will find some that may attract your attention. Here are the ones I got for myself and so far they have been great choices.

At the moment I am writing this, there are more than 47,000 free titles on Amazon. If you want to take a closer look to them just go to the webpage and type "free kindle books" on the search bar. You can also hit the 100 Best Sellers list, which will show you nice recommendations (both free and paid) Better yet, this list gets updated hourly.

Here is what I've got for free for my Kindle

Nice titles that I like. So far I am enjoying them!

Tip: you can also find books in some other languages in Amazon, just type "books in german" or the language you would like to find and it will show you some titles!

Did you know?

Amazon is already selling more ebooks than printed books!

undefinedYes. It is true. The digital store that Amazon offers is close to infinite. Everybody can now self-publish a book!

Amazon started to sell books 15 years ago on their website. Now, thanks to the digital revolution they are selling more ebooks than printed ones since 2011. If you want to check the sources here are the links:

Paper or Screen?

It is been said that, when reading nothing reflects light better than white paper, so this makes it hard to overcome by a screen. However, reading on the Kindle with the E Ink feature (in all models) makes it real nice and comfortable to read (from my point of view) Anyway, I want to ask you:

Which one will win?

Paper, I am an old fashioned person / Love the idea of touching and smelling paper. Like my shelf filled with books!

Holysheepskin says:

I'm torn...I love a hardback book, but the idea of travelling and having access to different books without having to lug them along is tempting.

Tolovaj says:

Paper has still advantages in some areas and book as decorative object with sentimental value will never be beaten by e-book. I firmly believe in that as full time professional writer and publisher.

ChineseKitesforKids says:

I'm with Virgina on this one. I like the feel of the book in my hand. Especially with my Bible because I am flipping back and forth and taking notes. With any book really, I like to make notes, reference points.

vallain says:

I just got my Kindle and am loving it. Still I love the security and comfort of having my favorite authors waiting on a shelf for me to pick up and start reading.

Screen, digital era will overcome everything, whether you like it or not. Love the idea of a thousand titles in the palm of my hand!

daria369 says:

I've been a Kindle addict for more than a year now. Love the fact that I can put all of my books in my purse and take them with me anywhere I go.

Mike says:

Love my kindle, but sometimes ebooks are quite expensive... they should be cheaper!

FunMoneyBusiness says:

SCREEN! I debated about getting on for a while, but it takes no time at all to get used it and prefer it. I moved countries, I HAD to make a decision then... I just had too many, currently replacing on Kindle! Get it if you want one!

Koupie says:

I don't like books when they get old and musty, would rather tear them up and use them in my art, so I have started reading books on my iPad through the Kindle Cloud app. We did give my dad a Kindle this Christmas though and it really is great, he loves it.

flinnie says:

Screen is best let save some trees,I will always love the feel of a book in my hand.

squidsrus says:

Everything that can become digital will be digital. No mercy on paper books!

Zut_Moon says:

I like my Kindle !!!

Susan52 says:

I can have SO many digital books, more than I could comfortably fit in my house, and certainly more than I can carry around.

ernieplotter says:

I used to think that paper would be better, and it is, the problem is that I am tired of dealing with libraries and publishers... they do not realize that I will get my books no matter what. If the traditional book publishers would poked their boxes like Seth illustrates, they won't be suffering as they are. Screen will beat paper soon in must countries.

Now, the books I bought

image credit: amazon.comIf you actually read my story on why I got the Kindle you will see that the books I care the most right now are Seth's. If you have not read any of those and you are interested on marketing, personal career or maybe just read something different, fresh and remarkable then any of his books will be a great choice.

The Domino Project

One place to look up for wonderful books

The domino project. Image credit: http://virtualdavis.wordpress.com/2011/12/06/seth-godin/Also, it is a great example of Seth's ideas about poking the box, spreading ideas and being remarkable.

From Seth's mouth, some of his quotes which are deeply relevant to this new way of publishing and sharing:

"The ebook is a change agent like none the book business has ever seen. It cuts the publishing time cycle by 90%, lowers costs, lowers revenue and creates both a long tail and an impulse-buying opportunity. This is the most disruptive thing to happen to books in four hundred years." ~ Seth Godin

"There is still (and probably will be for a while) a market for collectible editions, signed books and other special souvenirs that bring the emotional component of a book to the fore. While most books merely deliver an idea or a pasttime, for some books and some readers, there's more than just words on paper. Just as vinyl records persist, so will books. Not because a reader can't get the information faster or cheaper, but because there's something special about molecules and scarcity." ~ Seth Godin

"If you're an author, pick yourself. Don't wait for a publisher to pick you. And if you work for a big publishing house, think really hard about the economics of starting your own permission-based ebook publisher." ~ Seth Godin

"Publishing is about passion and writing is a lifestyle, not a shortcut to a mansion and a Porsche. Bestselling authors are like golfers who hit holes in one. It's a nice thing, but there are plenty of people who will keep playing even without one." ~ Seth Godin

Great books from college

Yes, some things were truly great at business school

Besides partying and social life, I had some great teachers at school that made courses so enjoyable. As I recall, some of them gave us nice books with great ideas about businesses facts and stories (None of them actually made a test about them) that reinforced what they were trying to teach us.

I am glad I got some of them, here is a short list of titles I remember right now, these books were great during school, so great that I feel like recommending them for your Kindle!

I just got a Kindle for Christmas and I'm already hooked. So far I've downloaded about a dozen titles, most of them free. Luckily I don't have ads on my Kindle but it's nice to know there's a way to get rid of them if somebody has the version with ads.
