My Favorite Backpacking Links

Ranked #14,368 in Sports & Recreation, #346,302 overall

I've been collecting links to backpacking websites for years...ever since I began preparing for my hike on the Appalachian Trail. I've been frustrated with my web browser, though, because now and then it arbitrarily switches my bookmarks around so I can't find anything -- and you never know when I may need to take off on a six-month hike! So I decided to try listing my favorite links here. They will be loosely organized and formatted simply, since this is a functional listing and not meant to compete in any beauty contest. Also, backpacking websites tend to go by the wayside, so some links here may end up broken.

Continental Divide Trail

International Appalachian Trail

The International Appalachian Trail stretches about 700 miles through Maine, New Brunswick, and Quebec, and they are working on extending it through Newfoundland and perhaps farther. I don't know why it's so dang hard to find organized information about this trail.

Eastern Continental Trail

And American Mountains Trail

The Eastern Continental Trail is a concept linking together other established trails. It includes the International Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Trail, the Benton MacKaye Trail (in Georgia), the Georgia Pinhoti Trail, the Alabama Pinhoti Trail, and the Florida Trail, plus the road walk to Key West, Florida. The Pinhoti, Benton MacKaye, AT, and IAT section comprise the American Mountains Trail.

North Country Trail

The North Country Trail is an east-west trail of 4600 miles, which includes road walking. It travels through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota. The route through the Adirondacks is still in the planning stage, so hikers choose their own route through the park.

Sea-to-Sea "Trail"

The Sea-to-Sea Trail is another concept trail that incorporates parts of other established trails. The entire length is 7700 miles, and it reaches from Cap Gaspe in Quebec to Cape Alva in Washington. The included trails are the International Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Trail, the Long Trail, the North Country Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, the Pacific Northwest Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail. There is a 30-mile gap in Vermont, between the LT and the New York border, and an 800-mile gap in North Dakota and Montana, between the NCT and the CDT.
