Must Read Marketing Books

I have to admit, most of my favorite marketing books are not really about general marketing. They are about Online Marketing and Social Media etiquette and strategy.
Like it or not, Web 2.0 is the new face of the consumer. Virtually every person who uses the internet researches products online before they make buying decisions and unless you have the only grocery store in town or you sell electricity you need to be present on the internet.
Luckily there are some brilliant minds out there who can help you use the internet for business, from one man shows to major corporations.

Unmarketing by Scott Stratten

This book is not only informative but it is also a pleasure to read. I laughed and gasped and couldn't help but react out loud from start to finish. It is blocked with great advice for people doing business on social media and gives oodles of reasons for those not yet involved to jump on the train. Add in some fantastic and outlandish case studies and you have a book to add to the arsenal of devices to put you on your way to social media marketing success.

It's funny. It's informative. It will help anyone kick start or improve their social media presence and strategy.

A Mix of Psychology and Business

That is what marketing is. It is a mix of Psychology and Business.
I have a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. The first thing most professors do in grad school on the first day of classes is go around the room and ask everyone to talk about themselves a little. Most of the students in my class had an undergrad in business. There were a couple engineers, a couple arts degree holders, and a lone chemist who wanted a change in life direction.
Everyone I talked to or got to know asked "How did you get from psychology to business?" I was amazed how many people - or rather how many business people didn't get it. Even now I have potential employers question the logic behind the educational progression. To me it seems perfectly logical. Of course, I did read the text books in both programs. The truth is, you can tear the cover off a social psychology book and replace it with an organizational behaviour cover and no one would be the wiser. You could replace the cover of a cognition book with a consumer behaviour one and questions would not arise.
Business is knowing the psychology of an organization, its people and how they work together. Marketing is knowing the psychology of the consumer, what makes them tick, who they are, and how they think.

Buy-ology by Martin Lindstrom

This book looks at consumer behaviour through the lens of cognitive neuroscience. It reads like a novel, and is full of interesting tidbits about why we buy what we buy - even if we are unaware.
